In a blocky incident at Charles Broadway Rouss's store a photographer using blitz pulver in a lamp caused a dangerous flash and blast. Workers feared a bomb as the blast rattled the office and nearby staff rushed in. The blind owner and stenographer feared for injuries but no one was hurt.
The Weshudas club returns to Winchester after a fortnight at Capon near Hook's Mill. Members including Vance Yeakley, Capt. Breckinridge, Wash. Seal, John Smith, Page Timberlake, and others arrived or returned with reports of a jovial expedition that added flesh and enjoyment.
A Conway lawn yard party at Sacred Heart saw smaller ice cream and lemonade sales due to a cool wave while many young men sought glimpses of the future from gypsies. The Friendship Company and band are set to perform this evening, drawing a large crowd.
Cy Cummings' team beat Edinburg 12 to 10 at Front Royal grounds yesterday. Moran's Colts defeated Kent Street boys 25 to 1 in a regular slugging match this morning.
Samuel Hardy died at his west Water street home about 9:30 this morning after a long illness of pleuro-pneumonia. A native of Nottingham England, he came to the United States as a youth and lived in Alexandria before settling in Winchester in 1823. He worked as a tallow chandler before petroleum declined his trade, later serving as a watchman for the 8. V. N. Bank. He married Salina March in the 1840s. six children survive along with one brother and six sisters.
Mrs. Scott Fuller on east Monmouth street woke at about 3 am to noises at her lower house area and fired two shots into the air, scattering prowlers. Neighbors heard the disturbance and some saw men running. At Market and Monmouth streets, J. P. Sartelle awoke and discharged a shot after noting the flashes.
Mr. C. E. Dudrow traveling passenger agent of the Valley Branch B and O relocates his office furniture to Harper's Ferry for central location in the territory. He will spend one day weekly in this city at the old quarters when available.
Ex Gov Holliday handed Capt J K McCann president of the Southwest Agricultural Society a $1000 check he received from Chas Broadway Rouss. The gift continues Mr Rouss usual support to aid the society’s upcoming event.
An unknown person attempted to wreck the northbound Norfolk and Western train due at Boyce at 8 18 p m Rocks were wedged between the rails at the switch The engineer halted the train before a disaster and the track was cleared Police Superintendent Hogan pursues leads and vows to arrest the culprits with full investigation of several suspicious youths seen nearby
Baltimore artist Thomas C. Corner completed a life size portrait of ex Governor F. W. M. Holliday. The work, painted in Winchester, emphasizes the governor’s hardy features and Confederate soldier bearing. The painting now hangs at Myers and Hedian art gallery in Baltimore.
Miss Peacock and several young women returning from a Bryarly school house yard party near Yanked Dam were involved in a bicycle mishap. Her wheel slipped on broken rock, causing a collision and injuring Miss Peacock slightly.
