The Pennsylvania Legislature appropriates 25000 dollars for a National Cemetery monument honoring local Pennsylvania dead buried at the site. Plans will be drawn at once and the Governor will likely deliver the unveiling address.
Mr and Mrs George Pfaff of New York visit Shenandoah Valley residents at Dr Northcott sanitarium near Luray Caverns. Pfaff supported the Thaw conviction, recounting letters from across the United States and predicting the next trial will review testimony not released to the public. The Pfaffs plan to return Friday and then travel to Washington after buying a fine horse and using a Clinedinst buggy.
Frank Palmer, a street department employee at the city stone quarry on West Leicester street, had two fingers badly mashed when a heavy stone slipped during a lift. He was taken to Dr. Robert McC Glass for sewing and dressing of the injured fingers.
The Common Council of Winchester enacts a detailed appropriation for the 1907 1908 fiscal year. It covers debt interest, street lighting, poverty relief, public schools, water works, streets, courts, sidewalks, elections, sinking fund, city hall, contingent funds, police uniforms, and fire department expenses with quarterly payments and reporting requirements.
The Martinsburg Journal makes its first appearance this afternoon with sixteen pages printed on a duplex press and set on linotype. The Star also goes to press at noon today to mark the birth of the new Martinsburg daily with Star staff on site to watch the launch.
Winchester workmen expect a share as the Handley Library contract for 100000 dollars is awarded to Mankin Construction of Richmond. Local contractor Hunter B Grim will handle excavating and brick and stone work totaling 28000 dollars. Grim says excavating is half finished and his crews are at work.
Noonan and Noakes, saloonists of Mair Street, opened their popular bar with an exhibit by an expert engraver. The valued picture, about 200, plus a frame, attracted attention as a fine work of art. The proprietors invite friends and the public to view the piece.
The Star lists daily prices paid by Winchester dealers with corrections. Readable figures show pigs veal and other commodities with notes on shifts in value.
A birthday party was held Monday afternoon at Mr and Mrs John Fryes West Water street home for their daughter Evangeline. Many young guests enjoyed games and amusements then refreshments. Numerous gifts were given to the popular child.
A moving picture show is slated to open in the Trunteberry building with a premiere planned. Local officials announced the venue will host films and screenings starting soon, attracting residents and visitors alike.
Partly cloudy and much cooler tonight with frost in the mountain districts. Thursday is forecast to be fair across the state.
A telegram from California reports the drowning death of Wright Robinson, 26, recently graduated in law from the University of Missouri. He was the son of Thomas W. Robinson of Macon, Missouri, nephew to Etta Robinson, and cousin to Silas and Rufus Robinson. The body had not yet been recovered.
Mrs Delight Smith widow of George Smith died at her home near Boyce after a lingering illness at age 73. Her husband came from New York to Clarke county about 35 years ago and died earlier. Survived by daughter Mrs Fenton Stickels of York Pennsylvania step son Irvin Smith of Hillsboro Virginia and granddaughter Mildred Carpenter of Boyce. Funeral arrangements pending.
Mrs Rebecca Hodgson aged 95 spends the day with Mrs William Hottle at Albit. She is accompanied by her granddaughter Miss Mabel Willis, Mrs Nettie Ryan and Mr John Cooper Sr. Hodgson remains energetic and youthful in spirit amid the outing.
Telegram reports Taylors Violet in critical illness at Lando, 8 C. His father Mr John Violet and relatives wish him a speedy recovery. The son departed for the South about three months ago.
Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr., son of Mr and Mrs R E Byrd of Winchester, recently sat for entrance to the United States Naval Academy in Washington. The results will be announced on May 10.
Fire erupts in the Cumberland Valley Railroad yard at Chambersburg Pennsylvania. Two large lumber yards are destroyed and surrounding property is at risk as Chambersburg requests aid from Waynesboro and Hagerstown. Firefighters from these cities rush to the scene and help control the blaze. a passenger train to Winchester is delayed but later passes.
From Harrisonburg comes praise for The Winchester Evening Star and its duplex perfecting press. The Star prints six pages and delivers over 3,000 papers per hour, signaling progressive management and rising prosperity. The Winchester paper is cited as an example proving that nothing succeeds like success.
Sherman Roe an old time negro died Monday evening on the Fiume ten farm six miles from Winchester on the Senseney Road. He was buried there yesterday. Death caused by dropsy. Born in Fauquier County he had lived near Winchester for years. Rev. Washington Johnson conducted the funeral.
