Rev Frederick Cromer spoke at Centenary Reformed Church on his China mission with Fochow details and persecution, noting Chinese attitudes toward women and his own eye illness ending his field service. He and his brother pastor are in Winchester before he likely heads to Philadelphia for Mission Board review.

John Rice Powell 22 son of Cuthbert Powell died at Telluride Colorado February 28 amid an avalanche while rescuing Wade Crowe and another man. Powell and companions were buried as a second slide struck after saving a friend, epitomizing selfless sacrifice for others.
Rev Dr Henry M White former Loudoun Street Presbyterian pastor and current Opequon Memorial Church preacher at Kernstown suffered back injuries after falling from a ladder in the parsonage stable. He was housebound for days, walked with pain, held a brief service, and was expected to recover in a few days.

Reported for a colored cemetery in Red Bud, Josiah Powell died the prior Sunday. His body was boxed and hauled to town with household goods and hurriedly buried. Bystanders recall a groan from the supposed corpse as earth covered the coffin.

Lemuel Borden in Shenandoah County advertises his house and lot for sale at Calvary unless he finds a wife to help run it. A widower and lawyer, he drew attention when he led his wife’s funeral procession and preached at Calvary’s German Baptist Church. He is a notable eccentric figure in Winchester.

Meat merchant A M Zirkle tells of two colored women who visited his south Main street shop. One bought item while the other hid behind with a large umbrella to steal meat. Zirkle confronted them, exposed the theft, and warned other merchants of the con.
On Saturday March 15 Mayor Barton's mosquito ordinance becomes effective again. No new eradication measures will be adopted this year. If residents comply, the pest population may be throttled as eggs and embryos are destroyed now. Every destroyed mosquito could mean millions fewer next summer.
Mrs. Mary C. Havenner widow of Thos H. Havenner founder of Havenner bakeries in Washington D C and sister of Bishop A W Wilson died Saturday night at her son Rev Frank M Havenner s home in Georgetown of paralysis She was born in Baltimore in March 1827 and is survived by her son and a daughter Miss Nina E Havenner of Washington
