On Thursday March 13 John M Stickel will sell 13 head of horses 18 head of cattle 36 ewes with lambs 15 shoats and a quantity of agricultural implements machinery and corn and hay at the Carter farm midway between Winchester and Berryville Miss Maggie Neal left today for Martinsburg to visit friends.
Charles Pope of Stephensons county swore warrants before Justice Keffer for the arrest of Clarence Pond and Benjamin Cline two Stephenson neighborhood youths accused of breaking into the house while Pope was away. The pair allegedly entered, played cards for hours, and left with nothing missing. No arrests yet as the constable could not locate the officer to serve the warrants.
This morning Baltimore mail delivery failed at Harpers Ferry causing Winchester business to halt until nearly eleven. The fault appears to lie with Baltimore & Ohio Railroad officials or the railway post service at Harpers Ferry, with the five o'clock freight expected to carry pouches but missing the west bound mail.
The Round Club held a lively session last night with gymnastic apparatus ordered and library expansion planned. The debate on whether the Educational Qualification from the Constitutional Convention injures the state was won by the affirmative, led by William Herrell. teammates Frank Kohlhausen supported the affirmative while Reginald Haines and George Perry argued the negative.
Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Cooper of Winchester Virginia visited in the South and Charleston Exposition with trips to Florida, staying as guests of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Boozer in the city.
Contractor Charles E. Anderson of Wilmington and his wife Elizabeth, with Miss Alice Watson, were robbed in Washington yesterday. Thieves took dress suitcases containing valuable clothing. Loss estimated $300 to $350 and detectives failed to recover the items before the party left.
This afternoon H. H. Hans sold the Holliday property on North Market Street, once owned by ex Governor F. W. M. Holliday, to James M. Brown for 5000 dollars. The land is described as one of the finest resident locations with spacious grounds and a colonial house in the city.
Intelligence from Winchester reports the death of Michael Carmody in Staunton last Tuesday. A native of County Clare Ireland he was the father of Mrs. Conway wife of contractor Tim Conway of Uniontown Pennsylvania. Carmody died at the home of his son James Carmody in Staunton while residing in Winchester he was highly esteemed by all.
Port Antonio Jamaica cablegram announced Capt. George Baylor died possibly at sea or after arrival in Jamaica. Born 1848 in Jefferson County, he served in Confederate units including Bott's Grays and Mosby's Rangers, later studied law at Washington and Lee, faced test oath restrictions. His widow and relatives in Charlestown and Winchester mourn his loss.
The Sarah Zane Steam Fire Company No. 1 votes to hold a picnic next summer and to join the Cumberland Valley Firemen's Association. A tribute to Charles Broadway Rouss is read, with resolutions expressing deep sympathy and memorializing his generosity. Capt. Evans to form a committee by April. Edward Foreman elected member. Yeakley and Hardesty referred to elective committee. Chaplain Skelton participates.
The regular meeting of the Ministers Association of this city will be at the parsonage of the Brad dock St Methodist Episcopal Church South next Monday at 10 a.m. 8 D Skeetron, Secy. Eggs are 16 cts today.
Helen Jones alias Tub Smith escaped from a locked female cell at City Hall after forming a plan with Chris Garrison who was jailed on a charge of aiding the escape. Jones had been convicted for robbing a colored man and freed on bail pending trial. Police seek the fugitive as Garrison remains confined.
Mr. Hunter B. Seabright of St. Louis spends days with his parents on West Piccadilly Street. He rejoined his hometown after enlisting three years ago in the Sixth Artillery. He has seen life around the world, fought the Filipinos, served in the Ordnance Department in China, and now returns as a peaceful civilian.
