Morrison H Miller, a Frederick county farmer, was found guilty of murder in the second degree for shooting neighbor Crisman near Winchester. The jury sentenced him to ten years and four months in the state penitentiary after a long deliberation with initial leanings to acquittal.
Maryland firemen at their Ha gerstown convention received strong support from two Winchester units the Friendship and the Sarah Zane. Friendship with 53 uniformed men plus horses and hose wagon helped enlarge the parade while Sarah Zane contributed about 30 men and a drum corps. The Friendship reel team will join the hose race the next morning, as both groups seek prizes in line with past successes.
Mr. Charles Barrick of Columbia Furnace Shenandoah county died after surgery for appendicitis at Memorial hospital. Brought in in precarious condition his operation was said to have been delayed too long. Relatives were with him when he died and the remains were taken to his old home this afternoon.
An important meeting of the Frederick County Fruit Growers Association will be held in the county courthouse at 4 pm next Saturday. Arrangements for a packing school will be considered and every fruit grower is urged to attend.
In Hayfield Virginia on June 13 Mr J M Long a vigorous local farmer faced a terrified stand off with an eight foot rattlesnake. Surrounded by onlookers he fought the venomous reptile to death using sticks after a tense encounter that left him shaken but safe. The fatal snake measured eight feet with 22 rattles.
Miss Helen Schol lay Hardesty and Dr. Franklin Scanlon were married at 6 p.m. in Stones Chapel near Wadesville Clairke County Virginia. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. Dr David Scanlon and Rev. Dr Charles Scanlon two brothers of the groom. The bride wore white satin with lace and pearls and was given away by her brother Robert N Hardesty. Guests included several out-of-town relatives and friends from Washington Charleston New York and West Virginia. The couple will live in Clearbrook Iowa after July 15.
A Havana dispatch reports a major clash near Palma Soriano as rebels suffer heavy losses and retreat after 25 killed. Refugees from Palma Soriano describe a village burned and white casualties reported near the same area, underscoring ongoing violence in Cuba.

The commonwealth attorney of Frederick County was invited to deliver the principal address at William and Mary College in Williamsburg but could not attend due to prosecuting Morrison H Miller for the murder of George O Crisman. The graduation exercises were well attended. William and Mary College, founded about 1763, is one of America's oldest institutions. Mr. Larrick, a William and Mary alumnus, was valedictorian and won the declamers medal.
In Palermo on June 13 a riot left 150 injured, including 15 gendarmes, during clashes over a law restricting maritime agreements. Many women wounded. some believed to be near death, as authorities struggle to quell the unrest.
A mob of striking seamen in Havre France attacked the sheds of the French steamship line. Troops responded swiftly dispersing the crowd before any serious fire damage occurred. The incident was reported by the National News Service with no further casualties noted.
Miss Bessie McCormick wed Herbert Whiting at Grace Protestant Episcopal Church Berryville with Rev Edward Wall officiating. The bride wore white satin with pearl trim and orange blossoms. Attendants included Edith Darthwright and Margaret Potts. Music featured Miss Jane C Moore and a duet by Dr Archibald P Osborne and Alfred Kerfoot. The reception followed at the McCormick home and the couple planned to reside in Lexington Virginia.
Six reel program to be shown at the auditorium tonight features Trene's Infatuation and Cardinal Wolsey by Vitagraph, Brotherhood of Man and Hypnotized by Selig, Seven Bars of Gold by Melies, The Turning Point by Essany. Two of the reels are described as swell Vitagraphs.
The Republican National Committee seated contested Mississippi delegates after a heated session. Sturgis accused Francis Heney of fraud as he questioned the committee's actions. Tennessee delegates were rumored to switch to Roosevelt while bribery claims surfaced, prompting debate among Taft allies.
