Fire damages 1893 schoolhouse used by United Brethren
A large frame school building built in 1893 by the late H Gruver was saved from a major fire in Big Reliance. Villagers with buckets and wet blankets kept the flames from reaching the church and surrounding property. The structure housed study and recitation rooms for about 100 students and was not in use when the fire occurred. Principal R L Steele and staff Kline Ness guided the school during the incident. The Old Dominion Academy’s future rebuilding remains uncertain.
