Workmen digging a cess pool at 210 North Fent Street uncovered a partly decayed wooden box containing an infant skeleton. Neighbors recalled a colored maid who buried a twin in the yard nearly twenty years earlier, and the remains were reinterred nearby.
Mrs W Love of the local Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy urges a large turnout for the Martinsburg Chapter reunion at Inwood. The last Winchester train leaves Inwood at 10 30 tomorrow night, with meals 25 cents and dancing in the pavilion.
In Circuit Court Judge T W Harrison ruled for Shenandoah Valley National Bank against Tidball heirs over a 4000 dollar note from 1882. The decision endangers Tidball estate and prompts appeal to the state supreme court.
Madison Lodge I O O F held a private installation of officers for the coming year. Officers named include W. W. Coburn noble grand W. M. Calvert vice grand C. W. The Norfolk and Western Railway will offer half fare tickets only on July 20 22 23 2 and 27 including Sam Jones days. Admission will cost 5 cents a day on July 18 19 21 25 and 26 when the railroad will not sell excursions.

The Winchester Round Club held a summer meeting at the Evans building electing J. Olin Faulkner as president Horace McKinster as 1st vice president Claude Ryan as 2nd vice president F Asbury Kero as secretary W Harley Miller as treasurer Frank G Meamer as librarian and William Herrell as editor The executive committee includes George Heller Frank Mesmer Frank Kohlhausen Clarance Miller and Lewis McVicar The club showcases its library and current literature and plans stronger debates in fall.
Six men under Bushrod Pifer and Vance Plum work coal on Mr. Plum’s farm a mile and a half south of Taylor Furnace. A seven foot vein is said to have been struck by a Pennsylvania capitalist. A Fruit Growers Association meeting is set for Saturday July 12 to discuss crop prospects and fruit package prices.
Turner Ashby Camp met last night with routine affairs. Commander Barton presided and Chaplain Hyde opened with prayer. The camp declined to act on Mrs Virginia Mc Sherry s invitation for reunion attendance in Inwood due to short notice. Invitations from Camp Confederate Veterans of Strasburg were accepted for August 2 at Fisher s Hill. Framed Col Knauss pictures were placed, and 25 United Confederate Veterans buttons ordered for sale. Members discussed David Ransome s admission to the Richmond Soldiers Home, with ongoing correspondence. Comm Barton noted the death of John W Boyd, a former Imboden s cavalry member, and funeral details for Mrs William L Weakley, held at Welltown church with interment at Heterick s Cemetery.
The Kernstown Methodist Episcopal Sunday School hosts a lawn party on July 17 18 and 19 to cover incidental church expenses. Proceeds support church needs in the county town event.
Last night a horse valued at 1.50 belonging to Mr. Henry Carper died from coliary. Mr. Carper lives about a mile and a half from Winchester on the Front Royal road. Mrs. John L. Pender of Richmond, visiting her aunt Mrs. Banning, returned home this morning. Mr. Harry Kline left today for a visit to friends at Lebanon Church, Va. Cooper Bros. received today over the C V R R five tanks containing 30 000 gallons of their Independent 460 Water White Coal Oil.
Prof Baker of the Independent Fire Company Charlestown W Va secured four musicians J Mad Spurr Edward Spellman John H Henry and Harry Markell to join the trip to Portsmouth Va for the Virginia State Firemen’s Association. They will tour Washington Alexandria Norfolk Cape May and Virginia Beach with expenses paid and return August 23. Rouss Hook and Ladder Company will also attend.
Improvements to the front of John N. Bell's property on north Main Street in Tar Star were started yesterday. Lewis Trier holds the contract for work, which includes a glass front to the storeroom occupied by Henry H. Baker & Co. and other alterations to enhance the storefront in Winchester.
The United Brethren Church ladies in this city will host a yard party on Braddock Heights north Braddock street on July 10 11 and 12 to benefit parsonage improvements. Miss Grace Kaiser of Milton Pennsylvania is visiting Miss Katharine Wagner on North Market Street.
After a search of nearly two months Elenor Hall located her thirteen year old daughter Delia Hall who had left home during May's Pawnee Bill circus. Delia was found at John Anderson's home near Winchester with Lizzie Banks and refused to return with the man who found her. The mother sought a warrant for Delia's return and a guardian was to bring her to the city, but the child had not yet returned at press time.
Robert Orrick a well known colored liveryman and minister died this afternoon after a long illness. He was about 75 and had accumulated considerable property becoming the richest colored man in the area. Death followed injuries from being caught between cars taken some time ago. No funeral arrangements have been made.
Miss Louise Purcell led about thirty friends on a hay ride to Clevenger's on the Opequon last evening. The group enjoyed a delightful evening with refreshments and judged the outing one of the season's pleasant functions.
The account describes a Winchester party invited by a gentleman to seize his pond. Four invited men arrived with three friends, plus four uninvited. the owner kept his share and allotted equal shares to the invited quartet, with not all the best fish taken.
Hiram Lodge will meet tonight at 8 o'clock at their temple for a regular session.
Miss Bessie Funk and Mr Franklin Brown wed yesterday in Hagerstown after a yearlong courtship. The couple, both prominent Winchester residents, married in the Beeler Hotel parlor with witnesses present and planned to reside with the groom's mother on South Braddock street. The wedding followed a transit from Berryville and Clearbrook via Cumberland Valley Railroad.
