Nearly Drowned in the Opequon Creek Rescue by Horse
Harry F. Byrd manager for Southern Bell and Charles R. McCann son of Captain J. K. McCann were swept by a flood on Milkwood road while crossing the Opequon in horse and buggy. The vehicle was carried a quarter mile downstream and McCann, unable to swim, was saved by Byrd who kept him from sinking. Both men survived, a miracle, as the creek swelled by heavy rains and torrent.
