A 1:40 a m blaze destroyed the E L Henry livery stable near Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester. Firemen under Chief J W Sibert gained control within 30 minutes, saving the church and perhaps two lives. The stable fire damaged the church rear and possibly the organ, with a dramatic rescue of the owner and a worker as flames raged. The alley location behind the church echoed with fear and early accounts recall a similar disaster nine years earlier on the same site.

A Republican meeting on district convention in Luray

Finger severed in wood cutting accident at Conway Street home
W M Ritenour of the Conway house on east Cork street sustained a severe injury while splitting stove length wood. An axe struck his left index finger as he steadied a wedged stick, severing the finger. Doctors fear amputation may be required after initial sewing.

The 1902 reunion at Old Stone Church in White Hall Greenspring drew eight hundred to one thousand attendees including visitors from Kansas Maryland West Virginia and Virginia. Veterans Plan Winchester Visit During Grand Army Encampment
Superintendent Thomas H. Savage of the National Cemetery coordinated a group of 50 to 100 veterans, mostly from the Union side, to visit Winchester during the Grand Army of the Republic encampment in Washington D C from October 6 to 11. They arrive October 8 and will tour battlefields with guides, with possible mayoral reception and a detailed arrival program to follow.

Sousa Appears at Auditorium For One Night Stand
Sousa and his renowned band will perform at the Auditorium on Tuesday evening September 2. Tickets are $1.00 and available at Hable’s. The band previously drew huge crowds in Glasgow and will not tour abroad again this year due to home engagements. A clock on display at D F Hinkins, a jeweler, winds once every four hundred days and features a brass weighted pendulum that moves in a unique oscillation.

Exciting Runaway Claims Two Injured Riders
Miss Jennie Scothern and Mrs. Boden of Vaucluse were injured in a runaway yesterday afternoon. Their horse, which had previously harmed Scothern, ran wild and rammed a barbed wire fence before the shafts and tree broke. The women grabbed the bit to stay aboard as the horse wheeled and clipped them. The animal was finally subdued.

Engine Slightly Damaged by Fire in Baltimore and Ohio Yard

Lost Pocket Book Found After Train Search
Mr Harry Markell of this city misplaced his pocket book on a Baltimore and Ohio train returning from Charlestown to Winchester after a trip with the Charlestown band to the Virginia State Firemen's Convention. A search in Harrisonburg found the missing article in a coach and it was returned with its contents intact.

Dr Hutchinsons Father Dies Suddenly
A telegram reported the death of Philip Hutchinson of Stanley Page county Virginia aged seventy eight. He is survived by five sons and one daughter including Dr W F Hutchinson of this place and John A Edward L Herbert I and I A and Mrs John A Koontz of Page county. He served in the Confederate army and the funeral is set for tomorrow with Dr and Mrs Hutchinson traveling this evening to attend.
