Winchester faces a harsh coal shortage from the anthracite strike with no mining underway and weeks to months before supply returns. Dealers warn of possible winter hardship though soft coal remains available and no immediate price spike is seen for cooked food.
A Baltimore Sun write up extols Jordan Springs Virginia as a premier quiet health resort. It highlights Opequon Inn with modern amenities, ample cottages for about 200 guests, and facilities for golf tennis baths and reading rooms. Thomas Curran died shortly after midnight at his brother in law J D O Connell s home east of town after traveling from Homestead Pa in search of health He was about thirty five born in England and worked for Carnegie Steel Company He leaves a widow Miss O Connell and several brothers in England Funeral at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church tomorrow at 4 pm with interment in the church cemetery conducted by Rev W A McKeefrey.
Mr Roy Kern son of Rev Dr John A Kern of Nashville Tenn has been summoned to Macon Ga to accept a position as architect in a large firm. The offer comes after his meritorious design for a Confederate Museum building and he will depart Monday for Macon.
Rev Father M J Ahern a brother of Mrs M M Lynch of this city, underwent an appendectomy at Providence Hospital in Washington on Thursday and is resting easily with signs of a speedy recovery.
The week ending August 16 1902 shows unclaimed letters in Winchester Virginia. Names include Annie Magruder Mrs Gee Woodward Brentley Kern and P M. Recipients must pay one cent per letter.
The Red and Reel Club campers spent two weeks on Capon River near Breakneck Spring Bloomery West Virginia and returned yesterday afternoon. They report the trip as their finest with many small bass caught averaging one half to two pounds. They are sun browned and reluctant to end the venture. Led by E L Hodgson the party included Dorsey Yeakley William Flemister Jittn Brown Alfred Claude Ryan.
Yesterday Daniel Metz sold a valuable farm to J James Brown. The transfer details are listed as completed in the local sale records.
Mr. Clifton Hodson endured a week with a severe abscess on his left hand while camping with the Rod and Reel Club on Capon River. He reports the lesion appeared like a brief wound but no thorn could be found. The abscess was lanced last night providing great relief. Mr. McKim Beal and family arrived from Baltimore with Mr. Beal summoned to the city.
The Star notes obligations to Mr. A. Rutherford of Lenore for luscious peaches this year. The fruit was enjoyed and not responsible for the late appearance of The Star on the street this afternoon.
Mr J B Orndorff of the county arrived in town today and stated he intends soon to leave the county where he has lived for many years to return to his birthplace Shenandoah county.
Judge Wm Atkinson appoints Captain James M Haymaker registrar in the first ward to fill the vacancy caused by the late failure to qualify.
Mr. S R Atwell of Horsey and Atwell purchased Mrs. Emaline K Wrights property on South Braddock Street after a long public safety threat from the old stone house. The suit for damages against Atwell regarding the house collapse was withdrawn as part of the deal. Wright agrees to release all liability, and Atwell plans to demolish and promptly rebuild a new residence.
At Baltimore yesterday Charles H. Dickey president of the Winchester Gas and Electric Light Company resigned from the vestry of St John’s Protestant Episcopal Church due to a church quarrel over the rector. Dickey says he does not care to take part in a church quarrel.
Mr Walter Lowe of Providence R I spent time with Mr W F Watson at Armel in this county and returned home yesterday via Washington He and Watson were Eastman Business College classmates Poughkeepsie NY class of 799 It was Lowe s first trip to Virginia and he enjoyed visiting battlefields and other points of interest
Auctioneer Ashley G Swanson sold household effects in front of the Court House. The furniture belonged to Rev. Dr. John P Hyde former president of the Valley Female College and was part of the shoesh furnishings left from a three week college sale.
The State President of the Women's Christian Temperance Union of Tennessee will deliver free lectures at White Post Methodist Church Sunday August 17 at 8 p.m. and Boyce Methodist Church Tuesday August 19 at 8 p.m. All are invited.
At Woodstock Virginia yesterday the second day’s session of the Disciples of Christ convention was opened by J C Beaty of Winchester. Interesting services were held throughout the day and the convention will close tomorrow.

The will of the late Jas W Snapp was approved this morning at the County Clerk's office. His two sons Marion H Snapp and Oliver Snapp qualified as executors. The estate is valued at about $6 000.
The remains of Rev. J. C. Wheat arrived in Staunton on Thursday for funeral services at Trinity Episcopal Church. The choir sang the funeral chant and the hymn Jesus, Lover of My Soul. Masons and Odd Fellows attended, with interment at Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his four grandsons.
A mill employee William Dunn inebriated and enraged forced entry into the office of Manager F B Hunt at Virginia Woolen Mills. Dunn seized a loom weight and lunged at Hunt before being restrained by Hunt and workers and arrested by Chief Seabright. Hunt sustained torn clothes but no injury and will not press charges. Dunn faces a drunken and disorderly conduct hearing.
A one armed hobo refused to name himself and was arrested this afternoon for vagrancy begging drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Chief Seabright had warned earlier that day about begging around town and the man was found intoxicated using charity receipts. He awaits charges tonight at police headquarters after a sidewalk stunt led to his arrest.
Correspondence from Nivnenan Virginia notes Masters Calvin and Newell McCartney visiting their grandmother Mrs Virginia McCartney for the summer. Farmers report threshing mostly complete with a yield slightly below expectations. The Presbyterian Sunday School picnic is planned for next week at the usual site. Miss W Mabelle Miller returns home after two months away.

The De Luxe 160 page issue targets frivolous fiction with wit and versatility. The Book Lover is a leading American magazine devoted to books with wide literary circulation.
Dr. John A. Kern professor of Applied Theology at Vanderbilt University left Nashville for Texas after visiting his brother Postmaster Bentley Kern. He will deliver a number of lectures there while away from educational institutions and filled pulpits at Braddock Street and Market Street Methodist churches.
Messrs. Albert Smallwood and L J Hefflebower have secured the lease of the dancing pavilion at Inwood Park during the Fair next week. The duo will bring a good orchestra and Mr. Hefflebower will oversee the pavilion operations.
A yard party at Hillman's toll gate on the Valley pike near town drew a good crowd and yielded flattering proceeds. The event benefits Shawnee Sunday School and another party is planned for tonight.

Mrs Thomas Bocock of the theological Seminary Richmond is visiting sister Mrs W B Love. Miss Maude Hamm returns to Page County Virginia after a stay with Mr and Mrs Charles Sloat. Daisy and May Hamilton of Staunton visit the Corner sisters on South Kent Street and depart. Will Fritts family arrive from Jersey City to visit sister Mrs John Rosenberger. Miss Mastin of Hagerstown visits Winchester and stays with Mr and Mrs Mellinger. Others return from Beaver Dam and attend relatives. Mary a of the late William R Alan now of Leesburg visits Lotte Gibson at No 30 South Street.
