Mrs. Shirley Abshire of White Hall and her two daughters were nearly killed when a frightened horse bolted from their buggy en route to Winchester. The buggy struck a post, the horse leaped a fence, Mrs. Abshire was sprained and bruised, a nervous shock followed, while the children were unhurt and a helper returned the horse to the Abshire farm.
Robert L. Hartman, a worker at Gray and Streit bottling works, suffered severe cuts to both hands and arms when a bottle of carbonated water exploded during production. He treated at Dr. P. W. Boyd Jr.’s office and then returned home on South Market Street. He is the son of John L. Hartman.

Special to The Star Brucetown Virginia August 14 A house party at S J Swimley's home on Saturday and Sunday drew guests including Hattie Swimley Korah Hayslett Nellie Stuckey Eva Swimley Lucy Gaunt Ethel Clendening and others. In Taylor Ho tel alley on a Sunday morning a clash of intoxicated residents led to police court appearances. Cort Ailstock and Mack White’s wife Cora White were cited after testimony in typical local fashion, with Cora fined five dollars or thirty days in jail and sent to serve a month.
Tobe Smith, a well known colored man, has returned to Winchester after ten months in the Virginia Penitentiary. He had slashed Back White, another Black man, with a razor about a year ago, wounding his jaw. White recovered after doctors removed a large quid of tobacco from the wound. Smith was sentenced to a year in state prison.
News from Hancock reports William Jones, a Baltimore and Ohio trackman charged with killing Morris Van Gesen, is related by marriage to the Stotler family of Frederick and nearby counties. His wife Georgia Stotler was 14 at marriage. Jones remains jailed in Berkeley Spring. He has made conflicting statements about the shooting, claiming mistaking Van Gesen for Tilden Barnes.
Mrs Laura Gregg and daughter Miss Ladsie Hall arrived in Winchester with the remains of Mrs R I W Polk for final burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Services set for 10 30 in the mortuary chapel. Mrs Polk widow of former Winchester jeweler and organist R I W Polk. Remains recently disinterred from Philadelphia. Polk family includes two sons and three daughters.
Miss Gertrude Bassett spent the weekend at her home near Stephens City and hosted several Winchester young ladies at Vaucluse Springs. A notable feature was an elaborate supper on the velvety lawn near the spring. Mr Bagil Sine recently found dead in a berry field near Wardensville West Virginia. He served as a Confederate soldier in Command B Eleventh Virginia Cavalry and on one occasion dismounted to carry the flag from the battlefield after three stand ard bearers fell.
