A Baltimore American letter-writer urges the colored race to pursue property ownership and prudent stewardship. He argues self-improvement, temperance, and education will advance suffrage and citizenship, making the “mute sermon” of success the strongest argument.
Funeral services for Robert M Carpenter ten year old son of David Carpenter of Frog Eye were held at the family home with Rev. D Skelton officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hebron Cemetery as many friends and relatives paid their last respects. Mrs D H Patterson left for Shelton Mass to visit her husband formerly manager of Old Dominion Mills here now with American Strawboard Company at Shelton.
A fire at the Crawford Woolen Mills along the W. Railroad tracks caused about 200 in losses before firefighters stopped the blaze. Owner W. H. Crawford is tied to the Virginia Woolen Mills, with Winchester businessmen also invested in Martinsburg mills.
W L Seakford, ex Page county, wins $8000 against Lane Bros Co for a premature dynamite blast that cost him an eye while double tracking the Southern Railway in Albemarle county. He sued for 10000. lawyers from Front Royal Luray Richmond Charlottesville influenced the verdict. The decision surprised many observers and may go to the Court of Appeals. The trial was hard fought.
The Virginia Grand Council of the Royal Arcanum sits in session at Richmond. Fairfax Council No. 1210 of Winchester is well represented by J Foster Gray. The local council shows a flourishing membership of representative men.
Dr Delaney Hicks a Washington specialist faced trial in Newport News for attempt to raise a bank deposit slip from ten to five hundred and negotiate it. The jury failed to reach a verdict, and Hicks was released on five hundred dollars bail. The defense pleaded insanity. Hicks was a former local resident.
Wholesale prices paid include wheat 1.00, rye 0.65, corn 2.50, butter 0.20, eggs 0.14, old hens 0.09, old roosters 0.05, turkeys 0.12. Mr Garland Hansbrough left yesterday for Newport News and Richmond.
Miss Helen H. Cone daughter of George W. Cone Riverton woolen mills manager married Logan Old a prominent Elizabeth City North Carolina businessman at her home. Rev Amos Clary officiated in a floral ceremony with nearly a hundred relatives and friends. The couple will reside in Elizabeth City after a Southern trip.
Senator Martin formally opened his campaign at Suffolk City Hall Theater Monday night addressing a large crowd. He rejected cloaked dignity and vowed to serve Virginians with practical action rather than mere words, arguing the North wins with appropriations while the South lags in realized gains.
John Smith alias Frisco Slim was arraigned in Norfolk State Court and delivered to James City county Virginia authorities for the Williamsburg bank robbery. He faces additional post office robbery charges but the stronger state case will prevail. Smith was taken to Williamsburg in irons after appealing to Judge Waddill to move the case to the United States Court hoping to summon out-of-state witnesses.
Q Henry Rambough a Lynchburg commercial traveler with a fair companion spent ten days in Harrisonburg at a private boarding house. His wife Emma M Rambough filed for absolute divorce alimony and child support in Lynchburg Corporation Court naming Emma M Topping as co respondent. Rambough reportedly left Harrisonburg after his wife learned of his whereabouts.
A Cumberland jury returned a 13850 damages verdict for Dr. E B Claybrook against the Mayor and City Council after his horse was injured by a terra cotta sewer pipe in July 1904. City Attorney Whiting reserved exceptions. the ruling may go to the Court of Appeals. Dr. Claybrook is related to Mrs. Hunter H McGuire of the city.
The Berkeley Circuit Court opened the April term in Martinsburg with Judge R E Faulkner presiding. Grand jurors were sworn at 9:30 am and cases against the Cliffords for the murder of Jacob Turner began. By noon J R Clifford, Sr. faced four counts and Paul Clifford faced five counts.
Governor Dawson appoints W. B. Stump T. E. Pownall and George E. Evans to a state commission created by the last Legislature with authority to lease or sell Capon Springs, a famous state property.
An all day education rally will be held at The Auditorium in Winchester on Saturday May 6 with teachers and pupils from Winchester and Frederick County to participate. The State Board of Education launches a series of meetings across Virginia this spring with noted educators and authors addressing the audience to promote educational interests.
Judge Thomas W. Harrison of Page County Circuit Court orders four Shenandoah City barrooms closed on May 1 after residents allege liquor sales to minors. Local option vote set for May 8 will decide dry status, leaving only one licensed saloon in the county.
Miss Nellie Virginia Herring of Baltimore faced embarrassment after Martinsburg notice misidentified her as the bride today. The invitations were sent in error to a different Herring, Pauline Virginia, who is not the daughter of E E Herring, the former Winchester merchant.
Miss Maggie Whooley and Mr John W Madigan ran away from Winchester to Hagerstown and were wed Tuesday morning at the Evangelical parsonage by Rev W B Lilley. Friends here will be surprised by the romance. Also Easter flower show at Florist Avalick’s on Braddock Street Friday.
Richard Good, a Capon Springs flouring and saw mill operator, was struck in the stomach by a piece of timber while at work on Monday. Initial reports suggested fatal injury, but later messages said he is extremely painful but likely to survive. His daughter Mrs. Oates of Hagerstown is at his bedside.
Excitement on North Main street followed reports that a buried body in a coffin-like box was found by a man digging a flower-bed. The finder later said the skull did not resemble a human infant and insisted it was a dog.
Jim Robinson a prominent young farmer near Wick West Virginia eloped with his hired girl Kate Cramblett to parts undown taking two of his four children from his wife. He drew out all his money four hundred dollars from the bank before leaving and is well supplied. No hint of domestic trouble but Robinson has been a heavy drinker for some time. Mrs Robinson is said to be an excellent wife and mother and no blame is attached to her.
William J. Brady of Berkeley Springs West Virginia and Julia F. McCoy daughter of Hugh McCoy of Winchester were quietly married yesterday evening at seven thirty at the United Brethren Church parsonage on North Market street. Rev Skelton officiated with no attendants. They will reside in Winchester, and Brady is employed as a telephone lineman.
Early frost damaged apricots plums and cherries with peaches hardest hit. Growers in Winchester reported buds blackened and many blooms killed though some protected areas may escape. Experts warn final losses remain conjectural and could run into thousands of dollars.
R Percy Hoerner aged 22 of near Hagerstown was dragged to death last Friday afternoon after a vicious colt bolted and his foot caught in a chain trace. The animal ran through fields to a farm house a quarter mile away before stopping. Hoerner’s skull was crushed and his body lay in bloodied remains despite the rough ride.
Hot Bread, Warm Kolis, Fresh Buns and Cakes advertised for four o'clock this evening by Miller Supply Company and Vienna Bakery Company with extra errand boys for quick delivery. Mr C F Shade of Westernport Md visits his old home near Nain in this county.
