LISBON Portugal Dec 21 The new municipal council unearthed a city accounts scandal reporting over seven million dollars missing. The National Government is blamed for the lapse and investigation follows.
Wednesday marks the last day of the term for K. W. C. students before January 5 with dorms deserted and exams. January 19 begins the new term with opening exercises and a noted lecturer. Basketball, literary society events, and multiple lectures fill the schedule as students prepare for midyear break.
The Owensboro banker James Parrish was charged with receiving deposits when the bank was insolvent. The jury reported a disagreement this morning and was discharged in Hawesville Kentucky.
Mr H H Phillips secretary of the baseball club reports Oscar R Schmidt was shot in the shoulder Thursday night while walking in Russellville. Schmidt recently signed to play left field for Winchester next year and is a Nashville boy who starred with the Russellville team. Officials hope he is not seriously injured as he would be a star for the Blue Grass League next season.
The Sperry & Hutchinson Company opened its 8S. & H. stamp premium parlor drawing crowds. The manager credited bold advertising for the turnout, noting the parlor’s tasteful decor by Jones-Lawrence Paper Co. and a vast display of valuable premiums customers can obtain with S. & H. stamps. Each visitor receives a stamp book and 10 free trading stamps.
The Federal circuit court ruled today that Harry K. Thaw, confined in Mattewan asylum in New York, cannot be taken to Pittsburgh to testify in bankruptcy proceedings.
Hart Chapter D A R schedules its regular meeting for Saturday at 2 30 PM with Miss Mary Bell Field Miller to lead or assist in the program and activities.
General LeVant Dodge state commander of the G A R will address the colored G A R Post at Winchester in the hall the evening of December 28.
City Council schedules a special meeting Wednesday night to pay outstanding accounts and close the bus year. The notice sets December 23 at 7 p m and urges all accounts be presented, as payments cannot be made until the February 1909 meeting. J A Hughes mayor and S B Tracy clerk.
The final shipment of turkeys from this city to the East for Christmas was sent Saturday afternoon to Boston by Toohey Bros. and Leon Renaker. About 300,000 pounds of turkey meat have been shipped from Clark county for Thanksgiving and Christmas markets in major cities. One last shipment remains this year, a single carload of mixed poultry and eggs. The total turkey shipment this year exceeds previous years.

President Martin of the Commercial Club appoints a nominating committee C J Bowen chair Ed Smith George Tomlinson J W Hollar and Will Duty. The committee meets on call to report on December 29 when President Vice President Secretary Treasurer and eight directors are elected. Officers serve one year and directors two. Installation January 14 1909 with a smoker lunch.
Postmaster R. R. Perry says the general delivery window will operate on Christmas Day with three time slots: 9 to 10 a.m., 1 to 2 p.m., and 6:30 to 7 p.m. The notice informs patrons of window availability for mailing and pickup during the holiday.
