D S Bowden sues the Lexington and Eastern railroad in circuit court alleging injuries from a Pendleton street crossing incident near the depot. Plaintiff says no flagman or warning and gross neglect by the company. Testimony continued Friday and a verdict is expected Saturday afternoon.
The Red Cross anti tuberculosis Christmas stamp arrives in city stores this week. Priced at one cent each, merchants resell at cost with no profit. Proceeds go toward building a sanatorium in Kentucky for tuberculosis patients.
Winchester Lodge of Elks No 589 holds its annual memorial exercises Sunday at 2 PM in the lodge room on Main Street. Previously at the Opera House, the ceremony will be private with ritualistic rites. Col T G Stuart and Judge J A Evans named as arrangements committee.

Ivanhoe Lodge No. 48 K of P held its annual election Thursday night naming J. S. Dills as Past Chancellor and E. C. Fitch as Chancellor Commander. Other officers include B. S. Bartlett Vice Chancellor, J. A. Boone Prelate, Prof. C. L. Lewis Master of Arms, E. L. Upham Keeper of Records and Seals, R. O. Fitch Master of Exchequer, B. T. Spencer Master of Finance, W. E. Curry Inner Guard, G. M. Hart Outer Guard, J. J. Adams Master of Work, C. H. Bowen Deputy Grand Chancellor, and S. W. Powell Trustee.
The Kentucky Court of Appeals reversed Clark County Circuit Court in Commonwealth v French. It holds Governor Willson's pardon did not relieve B F French of $500 damages added to a $5,000 contempt fine, only excusing state costs and fees to the extent the pardon covered.
Dr Porter from Lexington preached his last sermon and the pastor led Thursday night service. The house was filled with anxious people. Twelve were baptized at the forenoon service Friday. No new member joined the church that day.
Commander Shipley reports that Haitian revolutionists led by General Simon may have broad support in Port au Prince and questions remain about Legitime’s interim role. Meanwhile violence erupts as Nord Alexis is driven from the capital and twelve rioters are shot in the ensuing disorder.
Washington Dec 4 The Ways and Means Committee votes to extend tariff hearings to Dec 19 with authority to subpoena witnesses for supplementary sessions. Chairman Payne may issue a resolution when Congress convenes to compel testimony from key figures including J W Van Cleave of the National Association of Manufacturers.
Pine Bluff Arkansas reports the Arkansas river has reached flood stage at 25 feet after dynamiting the north bank. Cavings have slowed, barriers of willow fascines hold back water, and the threatened Jefferson County Courthouse and hotel now seem safe. Further dynamiting may shift the main current away from the city.
Postmaster General Meyer approved a new 10c special delivery stamp to go on sale within ten days. The stamp features a French style design, about one inch square in dark green, with an olive branch and Mercury hat symbolizing peace and haste, and the inscription U. S. Postage Special Delivery.
Frank Lee, a colored man, shot and killed George Porter during a wage dispute, is encircled in a barn near McCoysville Juniata county. Sheriff Kemberling deploys deputies after Lee sought lodging and refused surrender threatening to shoot.
Brownstown Indiana December 4 authorities moved fast to avert mob violence in the case of a Black man accused of assaulting Mrs Harold Danettell. After capture he was taken to Seymour then rushed to the Indiana reformatory at Jeffersonville for safety as a mob gathered here. Mrs Danettell remains seriously ill.
Akron Ohio December 4 1920s report notes sudden revival of business threatens a labor famine as rubber manufacturers say 2000 more workers are needed soon with automotive tire plants running day and night to meet orders.
Three roustabouts found dead in an abandoned sheet iron shaving hopper under Cincinnati's Central bridge after inhaling charcoal fumes. Victims are David Reed 25 of Pittsburg William Smith 35 and John Lewis 35 both colored from Chattanooga. They had slept inside the hopper for several nights while awaiting work as river conditions fell.
Tokyo reports a typhoon wrecked thirty five Japanese fishing boats off Natsu island Kawatsu bay. It is said by authorities that 850 fishermen perished in the disaster.
Gallipolis Ohio December reports ex mayor Adolphus Seebohm of Pomeroy died by suicide in a local hotel room. He belonged to a well to do family and leaves a widow and children with no known motive given.
Oleika Temple of the Mystic Shriners held its regular election in Lexington. James A. Boone was named Plenipotentiary to the Imperial Council. Committees were set to establish Louisville headquarters for the Imperial Council meeting in June. The Arab Patrol will compete in a prize drill and expand to full strength. The group enjoyed a Dutch lunch at the Phoenix Hotel with many Shriners from Paris, Georgetown, Versailles, Richmond, and Winchester in attendance.
Three Dutch warships steamed along the Venezuelan coast from Puerto Cabello to Laguayra at about three thousand yards offshore. President Castro had just left for France and many fear he may not return. Observers hope the display will pass without hostilities.
In Findlay Ohio on December 4 prosecutor Smith announced all indictments against the Standard Oil Company in the county have been routed declaring all illegal practices eliminated leaving the case closed for now.
Hon. W. R. Ramsey Colorado Assistant Attorney General and O. L. Burris El Paso mine owner Cripple Creek Colorado have been Col. T. G. Stuart's guests for the past few days and returned home this morning.
Cleo Duncan son of John W. Duncan of Richmond was found dead in an alley Wednesday night. Police believe foul play may have been involved in the death of the well known local young man.
The December 1 balance totals in Kentucky state funds are listed by Treasurer Farley. Sinking Fund 142,002.32 dollars, School Fund 763,334.97 dollars, General Expense Fund 374,712.13 dollars, with a total balance of 530,628.16 dollars. The notice adds a brief call to shop early to aid local merchants.
Philadelphia reports the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America begins sessions with 400 delegates from 33 denominations and 18 million members. Bishop E R Hendrix is named president. Committees discuss foreign mission cooperation and denominational unity while maintaining liberty. Officers include Rev Dr Rivington D Lord and Alfred R Kimball as secretary and treasurer.
Laporte Ind Dec 4 Attorney H W Worden released a letter by Ray Lamphere written to his mother after he was sentenced to state prison for burning the Gunness house. He protests his innocence and says he escaped being one of the Gunness victims.
United States Treasurer Charles H. Treat reports a 58 million deficit for last year, reversing a prior 84 million surplus. He notes that revenues for 1898 exceeded all but 1907, and attributes the shortfall to rising government outlays rather than shrinking receipts.
Frank H. Hitchcock chairman of the national committee, Treasurer George R. Sheldon who raised a million and a half to finance the campaign, and William L. Ward New York committeeman were feted by the Republican club of New York City for their work in Taft and Sherman’s election. Vice President elect Sherman attended as a guest and messages were read from Roosevelt and Taft.
In Hunter Springfield Ohio 34 year old Wagner of I was instantly killed in a hunting and race mishap. Witnesses reported tally discharge moments before the incident near the event, which lasted about 15 minutes.
