Pope Paul VI urged United Nations efforts to halt the Vietnam conflict, offering to assist Secretary General Thant. The Vatican noted new peace initiatives despite Soviet and French opposition, while U N diplomats saw no new proposals. The pope’s message could boost calls for UN involvement in peace moves amid U S and Soviet disputes.
President Johnson signaled willingness to halt bombing only if it leads to productive talks for a peaceful settlement in Vietnam.
