Six dead and fourteen feared trapped after a Baltimore and Ohio wreck on the main line. A Pullman crash left a flagman and four passengers dead and one decapitated in a baggage car. Eighteen others were believed still inside the burning coach six hours after the collision.
L E Hill of Nichols Company aboard the Baltimore and Ohio Ambassador when it crashed into the Cleveland Express near Dickerson Maryland. James Mason and Hill escaped from the third coach as victims cried for help and oil from the locomotive fed fires. Rescue crews and doctors arrived late with several priests aiding victims.
Telegram from Donald M. Nelson urges national scrap collection to boost war production of planes tanks and ships. He calls on citizens to gather scrap metals rubber and rags, cooperating with salvage committees to prevent steel shortages and build victory stockpiles as symbols of defiance.
