In Arkansas state reports D. Palmer Patterson, state director of the Federal Employment Service, says workers leave war plants for cotton picking paying $1 to $1.50 per hundred pounds. He cites a need for about 1,700 common laborers at five war plants with wages around $3.20 for an eight hour day.
In Winchester and Frederick County, junk dealers collected 16 141 pounds of scrap metal as a call to continue the drive to support soldiers overseas. The appeal insists every pound must be sent to aid the war effort against Japan and Germany, proving national resolve.
A hitchhiker wearing blood stained overalls was taken for questioning after the bodies of Charles A. Nash an attorney and group chief of the Bureau of Internal Revenue and his wife Eleanor M. Nash were found in their car along U S highway 66 near Springfield Illinois The victims were killed likely Monday night with a handaxe and the suspect was seen with the bloody clothing at the scene Police traced the car to St Louis authorities and a note on the window warned police the couple would be back soon

Arthur Shorts, 55, a colored cook at the Philpot Inn, was found dead on the B and O tracks near East Lane Avenue after being struck by a freight through Winchester. The coroner says the body shows legs and arm severed and head injuries. body dragged about 30 feet. Survived by sister in New Castle PA and nephews Clifford and Oliver Brooks and niece Octavia Brooks. Funeral pending sister's arrival.

Citizens responded to a scrap drive to aid steel mills with 16 141 pounds collected in Winchester and Frederick county on opening day. The Lee Baking Company contributed about 3 900 pounds, with 7 272 pounds by Winchester Junk Co. and schools joining the effort.
Mrs. Josephine Elizabeth McLeod, longtime Frederick County resident, died at her Stephens City home after a brief illness likely influenza. She leaves husband W. W. McLeod, a foster daughter Mrs. Frank Felker, and siblings Miss Louisa and Miss Katherine McLeod. Funeral Friday at 2:30 from the co chapel with Rev. Walter Smith and Rev. Frank Roof officiating.

At a Richmond meeting of Office for Emergency Management officers bids were opened for about 1200 square feet of Winchester office space to house a Northern Virginia O E M branch. The office will focus on enforcing price regulations with bids expected to be decided late afternoon.
