Chicago promoter touts Gate and Dempsey bout as history making with a $2 658 660 gate. Dempsey’s wife faints when radio announcer reports his comeback effort faltering.
CHICAGO Sept. 23 Leo Flynn manager for Jack Dempsey said he would file a protest against the referee and judges decision to award the bout to Tunney. Flynn claimed Dempsey had knocked out Tunney in the seventh round after discussing with Dempsey.
Gene Tunney wins the heavyweight crown in a dramatic bout against Jack Dempsey. Bronson’s advice and a late eighth round rally lift Tunney after Dempsey knocks him down in the seventh. Dempsey returns home without the bacon, while receipts set a record gate of 2.655 million.
Handley Schools faculty were guests of the Kiwanis Club at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester. Members introduced themselves by name and classification, a novelty that amused all. The event featured performances by Miss Hancon and Miss Freed, a quartet, and a female faculty chorus finale, ending with an old Virginia fried chicken menu.

Sheriff Panett discussed crime in the county since 1912, noting a drop in indictments and jail occupancy in early years, a rise to an average of 14 prisoners daily last year, and 89 prisoners in October. He recalled WWI draft duties and praised Dr. Arthur Wolfe on orchard disease control at the Winchester lab. Visiting Rotarians from Louisville, Jeffersonville, Staunton, and nearby joined the luncheon.
Edwin Giles Jr a member of Winchester s prominent family is described as critically ill from blood poisoning at Georgetown University Hospital. He recently injured his leg striking a filing cabinet vein and leg injury led to the infection with specialists fighting to save him. He is a nephew of John H Seal Sr and formerly Miss Katharine Seal of this city. He is married with no children.
In Hammonton New Jersey detectives say an eight year old son described repeated fights between Dr A William Lilienthal and his wife, with a man under police surveillance linked to the disturbance. The widow remains jailed on bail as a material witness while authorities pursue the homicide claim.

German ambassador to the United States Baron Ago Von Maltzan was among six killed when a Luft Hansa plane crashed near Heinreichsruhe between Leipsic and Nuremberg on a Berlin to Munich flight. An eye witness said a wing crumbled before the plane plummeted.
Charles A. Levine and Capt. Walter Hinchcliffe aimed for an eastward non stop record from Cranwell to Calcutta but landed in Vienna at 5 05 08 pm as weather hindered their 4750 mile goal. The mission followed prior record efforts by Levine and Chamberlain.
Mr Brandell Larrick of Gore Virginia was in Winchester on business today. He was recently appointed postmaster at the Gore post office.

Patrick McFadden a longtime Winchester resident died at his home at 603 South Washington Street in his eighty third year. He suffered a stroke years ago and lived in frail health but remained mentally alert. Born March 17 1845 in Croadbeg Ireland he emigrated in 1875 with his wife Annie Doran and settled in Winchester. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired as a watchman after 36 years. He leaves a widow three daughters and four sons and a sister in Ireland with funeral arrangements to be announced.
The Philadelphia and Cleveland American League clubs postponed their game today due to a broken water pipe in Shibe Park. A double header is now scheduled for tomorrow to complete the matchup.

About 50 prominent West Virginians sponsored by the Romney Chamber of Commerce visited Winchester and inspected several plants including C. H. Musselman fruit, packing houses, United Brethren Church dinner, Winchester Colt Storage, C. L. Robinson Ice and Cold Storage, National Fruit Product, and Shenandoah Valley Apple Cider and Vinegar. They toured Hamley School and praised the facilities, applauding the Chamber for the well planned itinerary.
Captain Ewart Johnston of Clarke county returned from Far Hills New Jersey where three of his horses won top prizes at the Es sex Hunt Club show. His entries Cavaliers by Medier Jr Shamrock by Gunrock and Clifton Maid captured silver plate blue ribbon and another prize. Johnston noted Virginia bred horses are in steady demand across the country and many top winners at the meeting were from Virginia stock.
In the county magistrate court this afternoon the Commonwealth moved to dismiss the warrant against O. H. Crum of the county for taking an automobile belonging to his wife Mrs. F. E. Crum. The charge was dismissed after Mrs. Crum failed to appear for the trial. Prosecuting Attorney Cather moved for dismissal.

The Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South meets in Roanoke September 28. Bishop Denny and eight presiding elders will lead a five day session. Four year term limits are removed for pastors but at Roanoke and Washington districts two elders face changes. The list of four year and longer serving ministers includes J. W. Rosenberger J. H. Wells J. W. Smith and many others across Virginia.
