Two cousins from Middleburg, Dulaney Randolph and Winston Frost, both junior grade lieutenants in the U S Naval Reserve, had a chance mid Pacific reunion aboard a carrier. Frost stood at the rail with officers when Randolph, reported for duty aboard the same carrier, joined the transfer of personnel. Both trained at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, at different times.
New Orleans war veteran accounts detail the USS Yorktown sinking on June 7 after heavy engagement in the Coral Sea and Midway battles. Ernest Boudreaux and William Henderson describe fighter actions, downed planes, and four Japanese planes mistaken landing attempts at night. Selective service officials led by Col Mills F Neal outlined early completion of registrant classification to inventory man power and prioritize induction of single men over married ones. The series of meetings across Richmond Lynchburg and other cities focused on keeping essential war production and protecting bona fide family dependents.
Edward Haight seventeen is held without bail after confessing to kidnapping and murdering 7 and 8 year old sisters Helen Lynch and Margaret Lynch. District Attorney said the case will be presented to the grand jury early next week. Haight was arraigned at North Castle town hall in Armonk for Helen Lynch murder and remained under guard in court.

James Elder, a Pearl Harbor civilian employee, found a copy of The Star in Honolulu. He read that Esten Terault, Handley class of 1938, was stationed on Oahu with the Army. Elder wrote Paul Fries and they arranged a grand reunion.
London reports indicate radio stations in central Europe went off air as Russian bombers operated and air defense nerves frayed over two way British Russian bombing. The War Department released an official casualty list naming 123 officers and enlisted men in action across Africa Europe Alaska the Far East the South and Southwest Pacific. Ensign Charles Tucker, son of the Rev. Louis Tucker former Grace Episcopal rector Berryville, is cited for bravery in action while serving as a dive bomber pilot on a U S Navy carrier. He studied at the University of Virginia and practiced law in Mobile before joining Navy flight training at Pensacola Florida.
