In Washington the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings on travel to Cuba erupted into violence as protesters clashed with police outside the Old House Office Building. Chair Edwin Willis disciplined disruptions while witnesses argued travel rights and alleged Communist influence amid a racially charged atmosphere.
