London reports a major American offensive in France beginning at 5 o clock this morning on the Lorraine front near St Mihiel and the Meuse River south of Verdun. A four hour artillery barrage preceded the infantry assault and tanks are said to support the attack.
Reports from Washington say an all American offensive began early today under General Pershing against Germany between the Meuse and Moselle rivers. Officials had no full details but some expect a major operation and potential flank maneuver. The War Department declined to comment.
Reports indicate General Foch may launch the next operation with an entirely American force under Gen Pershing. Officials confirm over one million U S troops under immediate American command, with more than 1 5 million men overseas prepared to advance at the signal.
The selective service registration for men aged 18 to 45 in Winchester and Frederick County started at 7 this morning and will run until 9 pm. Registrants must complete forms and return them to the Local Exemption Board within a week. Evaders may face U S courts. Continued on Page Three.
