The local selective service exemption board announces a registration drive for men aged 18 to 45. Registration runs from 7 AM to 9 PM at designated sites in Winchester and Frederick County including the Friendship Fire Company hall and City Hall police station. About 2,500 men are expected to enroll.
A British troop ship carrying 70 officers and 1,933 American troops was sunk by a German submarine off An American Rest Camp in England on Sept 11. Four destroyers dropped depth bombs. two torpedoes were fired, the second hitting the vessel as survivors were landed. Officials say no American lives were lost. The ship carried 500 crew and 22 stokers were reported killed. The transport stayed afloat briefly before sinking with no panic among the troops.
British and French forces push toward St Quentin and in Flanders despite German counterattacks reported as breaking down. New gas shells from Germany threaten Allied lines as St Gobain defenses are tested and American lines extend on the Aisne front amid artillery battles in Lorraine and champagne sectors.
The Friendship Fire Co. offers its remaining fire horses for sale at Winchester fair grounds. Proceeds fund a new auto hose truck. Chance tickets sold through Friday night with a final drawing at the Empire Theater. Returns from ticket sales will be announced. Wiley's drugstore advertises the sale location.
Provost Marshal General Crowder called for every flag to fly and every band to play on registration day to add significance to the event. He urged nationwide participation to boost patriotic display.
A mob armed with revolvers and clubs shot up and burned several butcher shops in Willach Austria. Ringleaders were arrested but released after threats of death.
Copenhagen reports a Vorwaerts dispatch noting growing public agitation in Germany over a critical food crisis. Socialist and union leaders appealed to Chancellor Count von Hertling for relief, citing physical exhaustion and rising mortality due to scarcity. Two houses at 14 East Gerard Street were offered for sale on Sept 21, per a sale bill on page 4. Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Bailey and family traveled to Winchester for the fair, and Miss Mary Cakmes of Richmond visits the Burgess sisters in town.
Lieutenant Edgerton piloted a Curtiss biplane from Washington to Winchester and back, flying just under an hour for the round trip. Crowds watched as the plane passed over the suburbs at about 11 am, then descended from 3500 feet to 50 feet above ground before continuing to Washington by 6 pm.
Miss Lottie Covington, graduate of Gregg and Massey schools, teaches the Gregg system at shorthand class offered at Fort Loudoun Seminary. New typewriters are available for students.
Notice to taxpayers states the 1918 tax books for Stonewall and Gainsboro Districts are now ready with a 5 percent penalty added after December 1. Spit.

Resident students and teachers arrive September 17 with school opening at 9 a m September 18. Also a notice seeking a home for a healthy six month old girl baby directs interested parties to apply to Z at the Star office.
The 106 W Water Street brick residence with modern conveniences and hot water heating is for sale to a quick buyer at 3600 dollars. Potential as office and residence. Attorney M M Lynch of Winchester handles the sale. Also listed are a Dodge car, seed wheat from Pennsylvania Seed Wheat and Rosen Rye, and 100 stock ewes from C R McCann.
A plowing demonstration is scheduled on Mordecai Richards' farm north of Fair Grounds. The event uses a Frick tractor and an Oliver plow with eight bottoms, set for Wednesday and Thursday morning at 11 o clock.
The Shenandoah Valley Academy announces its opening for boys at 2 pm on Thursday September 19 with Dr. J B Edwards serving as Acting Principal The school prepares students for universities including V M I and West Point and will host an inaugural session.

Motorcycle races draw strong interest while horse events threaten fast times. new attractions promised tonight on the grandstand rounds. The Mighty Doris Carnival Company showcases 1000 feet of midway frontage with fresh features as crowds prepare for tomorrow’s big day.
Frederick Land Corporation will sell at public auction on September 17 at 11 o'clock all doors with brass hardware and a fine lot of windows in the city to the highest bidder.
