Registration for 18 to 45 Men in Winchester Frederick County

The local selective service exemption board announces a registration drive for men aged 18 to 45. Registration runs from 7 AM to 9 PM at designated sites in Winchester and Frederick County including the Friendship Fire Company hall and City Hall police station. About 2,500 men are expected to enroll.

Ship Sunk No American Lives Lost In Sunk Transport

A British troop ship carrying 70 officers and 1,933 American troops was sunk by a German submarine off An American Rest Camp in England on Sept 11. Four destroyers dropped depth bombs. two torpedoes were fired, the second hitting the vessel as survivors were landed. Officials say no American lives were lost. The ship carried 500 crew and 22 stokers were reported killed. The transport stayed afloat briefly before sinking with no panic among the troops.

Lieutenant Edgerton piloted a Curtiss biplane from Washington to Winchester and back, flying just under an hour for the round trip. Crowds watched as the plane passed over the suburbs at about 11 am, then descended from 3500 feet to 50 feet above ground before continuing to Washington by 6 pm.
