In Brussels a gunman shot five rounds at Israeli diplomat Zakok Ophir 42, hitting liver, ear and shoulder. Ophir operated on but not out of danger. The assailant, naming himself Mohammad Rabah, fled. police hunted him as Belgian and Israeli sources described him as possibly Moroccan.
Boeing signs an agreement to sell 10 Boeing 707 long range jetliners to China, with a total package of about 150 million dollars including parts and training. The sale follows eased trade barriers and marks the largest pending heavy equipment sale to China this year.
U S jets carried out major raids on Hanoi and suburbs, damaging the Paul Doumer Bridge over the Red River and four military sites totaling over 300 acres. A Bien Hoa blast damaged or destroyed 70 South Vietnamese helicopters, marking the war’s worst air loss for the South to date. The Vietcong floated a peace plan proposing a coalition while US withdrawal and Thieu removal are demanded.
Senate leaders push final passage of a 34.8 billion revenue sharing bill after considering two dozen amendments. Supporters cite offset measures raising 3.7 billion, while opponents warn it could raise taxes and add to deficits. The Finance Committee drafted a formula favoring small poorer states over large wealthy ones.
A Centerville man Samuel Albert Austin 27 died in Winchester Memorial Hospital after a two car crash on Route 50 near Shawneeland. The other driver Charles Lee Corbin 21 was not injured. Corbin faced charges as the investigation continued.

State Division of Planning and Community Affairs releases projections showing Winchester growing to 38 400 by 2020 and Frederick County to 52 800. Current totals are 19 382 in the city and 24 795 in Frederick County with Clarke and Warren counties also forecast to increase.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a 74.6 billion defense bill, amending President Nixon’s budget with cuts and preserving key nuclear and missile programs. It backs Trident and B1 modernization, trims F15 purchases, and rejects or curtails several aircraft, tanks, and ships while promising further review of wartime spending.
In Munich three Arabs including a woman were taken into custody over the past two days while attempting to leave by plane as investigators continue to probe the Arab terrorist raid on the Olympic Village. The police found the detainees' names in the pockets of five Arab guerrillas killed Tuesday night during the gun battle that left Israeli hostages dead.
Saigon AP Viet Cong issued a new peace statement saying it is prepared to accept a provisional government of national concord not dominated by either side. U.S. sources in Saigon viewed this as a concession that neither side can win militarily. The VC urged U.S. troop withdrawal and an end to Thieu support, bombing, and mining of North Vietnam.
Boris Spassky arrived in Moscow after losing the world chess championship to Bobby Fischer in Reykjavik. He traveled second class on Aeroflot from Copenhagen and stood in passport lines while declaring he carried no arms. He earned $92,812 in prize money and plans a rest followed by a vacation.
Farm-labor contractor Juan Corona goes on trial in Fairfield charged with slaying 25 itinerant farm workers whose bodies were found in peach-orchard graves along the Feather River beginning May 20, 1971. The case, moved to Solano County for a fair trial, involves about 200 witnesses and hundreds of pieces of evidence.
