Storm damages cripple Chesapeake area phone lines
Damage to poles wires cable and telephone equipment from the August 28 storm and the ensuing repairs will cost more than 150000. Norfolk and vicinity alone face about 70000 in repairs with 12239 phones out of service statewide and 17892 in Tidewater rendered temporarily unusable by flooding fallen trees and damaged lines. More than 400 workers were mobilized to restore service, though Norfolk and Portsmouth still report outages mainly from cable faults and lightning.
