Gen Francesco De Pinedo Italy's famed airman perished when his giant fuel laden plane crashed during takeoff at Floyd Bennett field Brooklyn. About 1 027 gallons of gasoline fed the flames as the craft refused to rise and struck a fence. The body was found beside the wreckage after attendants failed to pull him free.
