National Fruit opens its Winchester plant for the season with apple prices. No. 1 York Imperials top at 3.25 per hundredweight, ciders at 1. The Martinsburg plant opens Sept 10 and the Timberville plant opens Sept 10 to 12.
A Shenandoah Valley spokesman for Apple Corp says operations begin Monday focusing on sauce. Prices for apples to Martinsburg Tim e and Winchester set daily, subject to change. National fruit prices reflect tighter supply with declines in New York crops, pressuring Appalachian processors. last year they paid 40 to 90 cents more per hundred than New York rivals.
The U S Department of Agriculture announced first revision in 12 years to U S apple standards. New grades to be published in the Federal Register and effective September 20 with copies sent to inspection offices. Virginia grower James Laise notes farmers expect to use the new grades to reduce trade confusion and improve selling practices. The changes remove the U S No 1 cooker grade and tighten criteria for invisibly water damaged fruit to U S extra fancy grades.
Tonight the Friendship Fire Company holds Boot Night to raise money for its rescue and salvage unit with members carrying a fireman's boot from door to door. David Rowland the Handley Library librarian was spotted riding a bike this morning with coat tails flying and a thermos jug in hand.

County schools report 287 more pupils this year with 1 478 high and 3 673 elementary last year totaling 5 146. Ayler calls opening day smooth as city students prepare to return. Quarles lists return instructions and confirms registration done with no tomorrow registrations.
An Air Caravelle operated by Swissair exploded after takeoff from Zurich and crashed near Duerrenaesch, killing all 80 aboard including 66 Swiss and 44 from Humlikon. The disaster, Switzerland's worst since World War II, left wreckage over a square mile as rescue efforts continued and passenger lists were being compiled.
Clarke County public schools opened with 63 more students than last year. Berryville Elementary 718 up from 709, Boyce Elementary 244 up from 234, Clarke County High 515 up from 504, Johnson Williams Elementary 262 up from 247, and Johnson Williams High 128 up from 113.
Robert Schuman 77, famed as father of European unity, died in Metz France after a long illness. He authored the Schuman plan for the European Coal and Steel Community linking France West Germany Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The plan helped birth the Common Market later named the European Economic Community. Promoters hoped it would unite Europe politically as well as economically. He fell seriously ill last month and received Catholic final rites after a stroke and respiratory trouble.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee reported the balance of risks favors ratification of the limited nuclear test ban treaty. It says underground testing could slow Soviet progress and that proceeding now would curb test costs and prevent escalation. The 16 to 1 vote sets a debate path on the Senate floor next Monday.
At Graymont grammar school Dwight and Floyd Armstrong with four Black men entered the building and enrolled in fifth and sixth grades, becoming the first Black pupils in Alabama elementary schools alongside white children. About 100 white demonstrators gathered, police used riot squads, and arrests were made. Governor Wallace sent state forces but did not deploy at the three desegregation sites. Also, Ramsay and West End high schools saw protests while Mobile registered two Black students in the 12th grade without incidents.
Clarke County Board of Supervisors approved Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works contract for Plan 2 jail remodeling at 39 271. Work includes new cell blocks seven downstairs five upstairs with corridors and a mechanical sliding door system plus electrical controls for door position indicators. Signing to follow minor revisions after Aug 20 session.
Police swarmed Central University in Caracas searching for pro Castro students tied to a raid on the air force headquarters. Four gunmen opened fire killing a guard and wounding a passerby. one terrorist reportedly wounded. Authorities seized two students and arms at a foreign students dorm. Local officials blame the Armed Forces for National Liberation and Fidel Castro sponsorship.
