Richard Hooker Wilmer (1816–1900) was the only bishop consecrated by the Confederate States Episcopal Church. Elected Alabama bishop in 1861, he was consecrated March 6, 1862, in Richmond with Bishop Meade officiating. He later clashed with Gen. George H. Thomas over church closures, endured wartime controversy, and his family continued the clerical lineage through generations in Clarke and Washington.
