A Winchester woman died at Capon Bridge West Virginia while two Maryland residents perished in a Front Royal crash. The toll for the 78 hour period rose to four with injuries and vehicle damage reported across multiple incidents.
Town Crier The Weatherman calls for fair weather tonight with lows in the 50s. Friday should be sunny and warm with highs in the 80s. Thursday looks partly cloudy but warm with a chance of thundershowers in the afternoon.
The extended Labor Day weekend saw 666 traffic deaths, the highest toll for that three day observance, surpassing 518 in a similar period. The prior Labor Day record was 636 in 1966, with 606 the year before. A two car crash near Jamestown Newey killed eight teens. a pair of Arkana accidents killed five and injured eight.
Newport News faced return to normal operations under police protection after a riot damaged East End areas. Police reported Monday night disorders, a Sunday night outburst causing one death, about $2 million in damage, 14 arrests, and looting of 150 Negro-owned businesses while roadblocks and restrictions remained in place. Virginia Rep. Thomas Downing and SBA officials pledged expedited financial aid for affected businesses.
Clifton Carroll Gant aged 55 died in a fire that heavily damaged his house trailer on Rt 761 east of Stephenson around 6 p.m. Saturday. Neighbors reported smoke and attempted to help, but he could not be rescued. Firefighters found the body at the east end of the trailer. the cause is undetermined. A graveside service was held at Jabbers Hill Cemetery in Brucetown. Gant, born in Stephenson, was survived by three sisters and four brothers.
Viet Cong guerrillas launched two grenade attacks in Saigon injuring seven civilians and wounding four others at a dock area bar. A separate mortar assault on Long Thanh district killed 20 civilians and burned 85 houses as US and South Vietnamese forces on high alert.
Mrs. Luttrell, wife of a former Frederick County supervisor, was robbed at gunpoint Saturday morning in her husband's general store near Cross Junctions. She escaped unharmed as the thief fled with about 500 dollars in bills after pulling a gun and forcing her to lie down. Police described the getaway car as a maroon Chevrolet Capri, 1967 or 1968 model, Virginia plates. The incident occurred around 11 50 a.m. as she prepared to open the store.

He spoke in New York after a Labor Day parade urging objective analysis and suggested Ford Foundation lead, defending Mayor Daley’s police measures while condemning police beatings.
