President Roosevelt told the International Student Assembly that youth must join the United Nations in a long war to shape a free world. He warned of a bitter struggle ahead and urged steadfast resolve to defend the four freedoms and the Atlantic Charter.
Governor Darden will speak at Berryville September 12 on a war bond and stamp drive and in Winchester September 13 for the dedication of the Winchester and Frederick County Service Men Honor Roll. The dedication program at 4:30 p.m. will feature State Senator B P Harrison as master of ceremonies and appearances by notable officials including William A Wright and Brig Gen S Gardner Waller.
In Egypt Rommel's forces probing near El Alamein faced intense air and artillery bombardment. British ground screening held strong points along the 40 mile line as Rommel’s columns, eight miles into minefields, failed to force a breakthrough. The Luftwaffe and German units engaged in frequent dogfights with Allied air power amid relentless bombardment. Montgomery asserted the Eighth Army remains in organized defense with no Axis penetration.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau urged the Senate Finance Committee to enact an extra $6.5 billion in taxes, plus a $4.5 billion postwar rebate to individuals, boosting total annual tax intake to about $30.5 billion. He proposed a broad consumer spending levy and lower exemptions, while senators favored a manufacturer sales tax to meet revenue goals.
Secretary Stimson announced a policy to potentially double women war workers in arsenals depots and offices to ease manpower shortages. About 300000 women already work on guns planes and tanks and in clerical roles with more absorption possible. Women will be preferred where qualified while allowing qualified men to be employed if ineligible for military service. An Army program also allows personalized designs on equipment to boost unit morale.
MA Winchester notes apple time is near with harvest to follow in Shenandoah Valley. Last year some apples reached lunch boxes of children across the country. this year more will be introduced as part of balanced diets. He also mentions apple syrup and a blind test by a shopper at a five and dime.

Walter and Wilmer Anderson, farmers, announce the birth of daughters to each family. Walter wed Garnetta Wilson five years ago and Wilmer married Garnetta’s sister Rilla four years ago. Both mothers and babies are reported doing well. names not yet chosen.
The Frederick County Selective Service Board announces selectees will report for induction on Friday September 4. They will depart by bus from local 0 at 6 45 a m for Camp Lee after a 14 day furlough.
A list of sixty Frederick county selectees has been posted for September 5 at Charlottesville. Names include William Ray Peacemaker and many others from Winchester, Stephens City, Opequon, Berryville, Star Tannery, and surrounding communities.
Handley’s 1932 graduates plan a reunion Saturday at the Golden Glow Coffee Shop with 99 members invited. John J. Hawse will be toastmaster. Officers include Miss Charlotte Campbell president and Lt Leslie Posthamus secretary. Eight are in the armed forces. one is injured at Pearl Harbor.
Twenty two Clarke county youths will report for active duty at Camp Lee on September 8 after induction at Charlottesville August 25. The Red Cross Canteen Corps led by Miss Rose MacDonald will send each selectee off with food and cigarettes, with two weeks furlough remaining.
The Jockey Club announces a riding tournament with refreshments Sunday afternoon in Mt Fallis Virginia. The event is listed for Sunday after noon on September 6 with planning by the club and local organizers. The Sarah Zane Fire Co meets Friday September 4 at 8 pm. All members are requested to attend.
Church hosts chicken and ham supper on September 4 from 5 30 p m until sold out Adults pay 50 cents and children 25 cents Cemetery Committee oversees the event.

Charles A. Pop Johnson of Washington proves age no obstacle by piloting his own plane. The 67 year old recently moved his aircraft to Municipal field from Congressional near Washington and flew solo to Pittsburgh.
BOYCE Va September 3 The Boyce chapter of the American Red Cross will meet Tuesday September 8 at 2 oclock in the afternoon at which time surgical dressing will be made All women of the community who can spare the time are urged by the chapter officials to be present.
Moscow dispatch reports German assault on Stalingrad checked at approaches from the northwest while the Red Army withdraws to the Volga port area to the southwest. Despite heavy fighting, Russian anti aircraft crews halted tanks at the edge of the city and were relieved by reinforcements as air battles raged above Stalingrad and Novorossisk.
The corn crib and barn behind the Boyce restaurant were sold to Emmett Stuart who will move them to White Post after tearing them down. Bus travel rose about 50 percent through Millwood and Boyce since the fire and rationing, with routes forced to stop in town. The Shenandoah river near Berry's and Castleman's ferries clears after heavy rains, aiding fishing. White Post residents fund an airplane spotter post to be staffed 24 hours a day. London reports a major RAF bombing raid on Karlsruhe in the upper Rhineland to mark Britain's war anniversary. Large fires and smoke stretched over the city as 200 plus bombers attacked targets around the rail shops while nearby raids hit northern France and the Isle of Wight area.
Clarke County Ration Board issued sugar permits to residents in Berryville Boyce and White Post for 30 7440 pounds. August applications totaled 581 with Berryville 392 and White Post 56 recipients, yielding 3 049 pounds in August.
