Night of car thefts and jail escape rattles Winchester
Police reported two cars stolen from downtown Winchester between 7 and 9 pm with one recovered on South Kennt street. An inmate, J G Williams, escaped by scaling the jail wall while another prisoner, Franklin Hawkins, was captured on Highland avenue. A northwest city grocery, Harry Potts on Fairmont avenue, was burglarized with cigarettes, tobacco, cigars, gum, bacon, chipped beef, a rain coat and lard taken along with about 100 pennies from the cash drawer.

Four Winchester banks will reopen Saturday evening hours from 7 to 9 o clock starting this week and continuing until Christmas. The two hour schedule is aimed at helping apple growers and employers who cannot cash checks Saturday afternoon.
