The four day Winchester Fair ends amid showers with a grand fireworks finale planned and heavy gates, while attendance falls short of prior years. Racing summaries include a free-for-all purse and a trotting purse with winners from Emproia Virginia and Berryville Virginia.
H. L. Hughes of Culpeper Virginia has acquired the Ford agency in Winchester and will open within a week or ten days after securing a location. Hughes runs Culpeper Motor Co and has a decade in the automobile trade.
The Great Winchester Fair hosts dancing Thursday and Friday nights with concerts set in the pavilion. Event runs from 9 to 2 with admission details not specified in the fragment.
Three Baltimore and Ohio train crew were killed and two others injured in a head on collision near Foley Pennsylvania between a westbound passenger train from New York and an eastbound freight. Signals against the freight led engineer J R Kincaid to misread clear and crash into the passenger train. Newton D Baker a passenger escaped injury.
The mule race at the Winchester Fair drew the largest crowd though not NASR sanctioned. Three mules with colored riders and a white rider faced delays and balks as the white rider briefly led before his mule stalled. The colored riders then coaxed their mounts to pass the stalled winner near the wire.
The remains of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Lantz were sent to Washington via Baltimore and Ohio Railroad after death at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Frank and Mrs. Barr southeast of the city. Funeral will be held tomorrow at noon from Christian S. Lantz’s home 1516 D Street S. E. with burial at Congressional Cemetery. She was 79 years old and born in Martinsburg daughter of John L. Sayles native of Isle of Man. She leaves a daughter, a son, and a sister, Mrs. Emily C. Dooley.
Square dance event scheduled for Monday September 6 at Cook's Park. Dance session runs in the afternoon. Participants urged to arrive early and bring partners.
Handley Schools announce a September 13 opening with teachers' meeting September 11 at 10. Registration for new or returning students occurs September 7 and 8, with exams for new entrants September 9. High school conferences with Mr. A. M. Jay on September 10 and health certificates urged to avoid delays.
Mrs Miller, 72, longtime Martinsburg resident and Berkeley County native, collapsed while walking in Lovettsville Loudoun County Virginia. Paralyzed prior illness, she died shortly after being carried inside. Funeral set for Saturday at 2 30 in Martinsburg Presbyterian Church. Burial in Martinsburg Cemetery. Survived by daughter Mrs Horace McKinster and two sons Robert of Lovettsville and Samuel of Martinsburg.
A gas explosion at Superior Smokeless Coal Company's west mine No. 29 in Tahona Oklahoma trapped sixteen to seventeen miners. Lee Carter, last rescued worker, reported little hope for those still inside as gas fumes overwhelmed him. Rescue teams expected to reach entombed men during the day.
The Chamber of Commerce and Retail Merchants Association urge city stores to close all day on Labor Day. Many shops will shut, while some open only noon to accommodate essential services.
Albert and Joseph Dehaven sue Purcell Stine over a Martinsburg pike crash last November that left Howard Dehaven dead and Albert injured. The two suits seek 5000 and 10000 dollars respectively and were set for the October term. Stine was served in Winchester after being elusive from Loudoun county.
New York September 3 stock market gains led by rail and utility issues as weekend selling concluded by midday. Brisk trading for a pre-holiday session with call money at 4 1/2 percent and a firm close, totals around 1,350,000 shares.

In Lexington, Sept. 3, a wealthy restaurant and hotel man Kelly Co. Kirtly, 70, killed Miss Mildred McDaniel, 26, of Brooklyn, in a hotel room after a motor trip. He then shot himself in the bathroom, leaving notes that hinted at premeditation. Alma and Mildred, registered as sisters, say they were cousins and that Kirtly treated Mildred as an aunt.
The TC-5 blimp from Dayton to Langley Field completes 350 miles at about 35 mph. Lt. W. A. Gray says the flight was uneventful aside from storms and lightning. The ship will have its helium gas purified over four days before returning to Langley Field.
Valentino funeral party will not permit viewing of the casket on its Chicago arrival from New York to avoid a public spectacle. E M Libonatti heads the local memorial association and had asked for a viewing, but the casket will be viewed by thousands of fans only in Hollywood and the car will stay in Chicago for four hours.
The Star will not publish next Monday September 6 in observance of Labor Day following their usual custom. This note appears on page eleven and comes from The Evening Star.
The Shenandoah Valley Inc plans a full reorganization including hiring a secretary, securing headquarters, and continuing debt reduction of about 6000 dollars. President Howard J. Benchoff of Woodstock outlines the program, stresses patience, publicity, and leadership, and notes prior debt from Park program fundraising. The group will maintain valley cooperation and pursue renewed development.
