Chancellor of the Exchequer R A Butler ordered a 20 percent rise in purchase tax to curb home spending and push more goods to overseas markets. In a autumn budget to the House of Commons he also urged sharp restraint on local and national spending.
The Winchester Frederick Community Chest reports $28 465 58 raised at noon at Chest headquarters forming 67 2 of the 42 315 minimum goal for seven agencies including Day Nurseries Scouts The Salvation Army and Children's Home Society If the extra 3426 above the minimum goal is raised expanded programs will be possible says Charles S Toan city solicitation chairman Volunteers urge every metropolitan household to give one dollar as October wanes.
A ceremony at the Adams home near Gainesboro named E. W. Adams Jr and his family Frederick County's first Master Farm Family. About 150 attendees heard speakers recount the family farm's 200 years in operation, family leadership, and community service.

Mr and Mrs Ellsworth Dodson of Mountain Falls learn their son SP 3 Earl Alonzo Dodson died in a car crash in Germany on October 22 He was with the 63rd Ordnance Company Ammo US Army stationed in Wissick Germany Born March 2 1937 in Mountain Falls he attended Gore School and James Wood High School Prior to service he worked at Clem s Garage in Stephens City Funeral arrangements will be announced later Survivors include his parents two sisters Janet Marie Dodson of Mountain Falls and Mrs Harry D Pugh of this city
Sixty two cattlemen consign 1417 Angus Hereford and Shorthorn steers to be sold Friday at the Farmers Livestock Exchange west of Winchester starting at 1 p.m. Deliveries to the exchange began earlier today.

At Winchester Day Nursery meeting, nominating chairwoman Mrs. Paul Anderson presented a slate of directors for the year. Elected directors include Mrs. R T Barton, Mrs. Garland Quarles, Mrs. W H Lawrence Jr, and many others. Mrs. Robert T Barton welcomed guests. pupils performed solos and the group sang God Bless America. The nursery is an agency of the Community Chest.
