President Roosevelt faces a tense week as the CIO debates Lewis's role for Willkie. Reports indicate sharp internal divisions over public speaking duties and trip plans amid ongoing speech writing and travel preparations.
J D Pedigo of Roanoke VA says he is field rep for the Textile Workers Union of America. He cites a telegram from James Lemaster, president of Winchester Local No 362, dated October 26, 1940, reaffirming support for Franklin D Roosevelt despite an enigmatic endorsement.
The Associated Press reports a dramatic labor political split on the 1940 race. John L. Lewis of the CIO endorses Wendell Willkie, calling a Roosevelt third term a national evil, while Willkie campaigns in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. CIO leaders in New York and Philadelphia respond with pledges of loyalty or continued support as divisions widen.

No. 1 grades 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch fruit fetches 75 cents per bushel, 2 1/4 inch up in combination grades 65 cents, and 2 1/2 inch up in combination 15 cents. About 600 cars were bought last week across Pennsylvania Maryland West Virginia and Virginia, with roughly 200 cars for direct distribution and the rest stored.
The George Washington headquarters records a straw vote with Roosevelt at 99 and Willkie at 57 this week. Roosevelt leading overall since August with 1 457 to 1 281 for Willkie as ballots cast by tourists in many states are tallied.
Akron Ohio October 26 Frank Grillo secretary treasurer United Rubber Workers CIO said John L Lewis told three weeks ago he held an endorsement from President Roosevelt in his pocket to gain two objectives. Grillo said the aims were denying defense contracts to specific firms and reappointing J Warren Madden to the National Labor Relations Board.
Major A Willis Robertson of Virginia’s Seventh district campaigns for re election before about 200 people in the Frederick county courthouse. He denounces Republicans and notes Byrd’s influence while recounting his public service path from commonwealth’s attorney to Congress.
London reports warn of a renewed Oran battle scenario if France cooperates with the axis. British strategists foresee attacks on Toulon to trap French ships and possible moves on French bases in India and the Pacific, with wider Pan American focus on possessions in the western hemisphere.
H A Walker of the La Vale volunteer fire department was burned while fighting a bus fire that threatened a National Broadcasting Company Orchestra and The Four Ink Spots, touring Cumberland. All 25 aboard escaped unharmed as a brake caused the blaze. Walker’s injury came when a fire center he used exploded. The bus was charred on the right side and a tire failed.
Rome radio reports an imminent Italian offensive in Egypt. Sudden suspension of Italian air service to Greece raises questions of a possible immediate showdown with Greece.
Vichy reports Petain and Hitler agreed in principle on collaboration to reconstruct peace in Europe. A cabinet communique says means of applying the agreement will be examined later after a general examination of the situation. Laval and Petain discussed Axis talks with Hitler and other officials.
Washington reported that John L. Lewis endorsed Wendell Willkie for president, prompting White House claims that CIO leaders and local unions repudiated Lewis and pledged loyalty to Roosevelt. White House secretary Stephen Early said about 200 telegrams were received since the speech.
W D Sievers of Richmond Va was chosen as Scout Area Council executive to replace Dan O Henry who resigns November 15 to join the Philadelphia regional office. The Executive Board approved his appointment and Shenandoah Area Council will incorporate in West Virginia to own property. D G VandeBoe of Philadelphia will visit Winchester November 15 to review the office before Henry departs. Progress continues toward acquiring a Scout owned area camp site.
Berlin reports a German spokesman today dismissed US expressions of interest in German French negotiations as unlikely. He questioned why Americans would push into another continent when they emphasize the Western Hemisphere.
No Mercy London Oct 26 Jay Marchbank general secretary of the National Union of Railway Trainmen calls for heavy merciless incessant destructive counter strokes against Germany in Railway Review urging firm action by the union and workers.
Mamuto Shinozaki, an employee of the Japanese consulate, faced court in Singapore on October 26 for allegedly obtaining information about troop and aircraft movements and defense details of the British naval stronghold.
A Belgian freighter Kabalo was sunk about 600 miles off Madeira on October 15 by an Italian submarine. The submarine rescued 27 officers and men and landed them safely on Santa Maria Island in the Azores. The Kabalo's captain reported the incident to Portuguese authorities.
Secretary Hull declared John L. Lewis 100 percent wrong in accusing President Roosevelt of seeking to drag the United States into war. He said Roosevelt has long aimed to preserve peace and U.S. security.
The South End Hose Company answered a grass fire alarm at 1327 Valley Avenue on the old Whitlock property at 3 10 this afternoon.
