Former ambassador John Cudahy told the Relations Committee that the pending armed ship bill is a step toward war by subterfuge. Senate debate and White House push aim to let American ships travel to belligerent ports as they expand the measure.

Miss Marie Pierce a blonde divorcee faces trial for the fatal March shooting of Louis T. Moreland in Clarke County near Berryville. Moreland died May 6 after surgery. A 26 man venire joins the original 23 jurors for the proceeding with defense by Aubrey G. Weaver and Kern and Kern and prosecution led by Commonwealth's Attorney Edward McC Williams.
New York October 23 German radio quoted Berlin military quarters claiming German troops are close to Moscow at several points and that the city may now be within range of heavy German artillery. The claim follows a prior high command note that German forces are within 100 kilometers of the Soviet capital.
Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing reports a net profit of 15.86 million dollars for the first nine months of 1941 and book orders totaling 450.24 million dollars, up 72 percent from the same period in 1940.
Lawrence Fields, about 50, was shot three times by a burglar in his Lynchburg home as he turned on a light. He died at 3 a.m. with his wife injured by shock. Police pursue a short stocky Black man described as the killer after ransacking the rooms before the bedroom attack.
Six crew members of the Great Lakes Towing Company tug America, from Toledo, drowned when the vessel sank while attempting to move the grounded freighter B F Jones near Peche Island in the Detroit River. Tazewell County Sheriff Bowen Thompson announced the arrest of 10 Virginia and West Virginia men in a series of thefts from automobiles across both states. Several suspects remained held in Bluefield and Tazewell jails with charges including possession of stolen goods and theft, while others were jailed in Lebanon and Bristol. Goods valued at about 250 dollars were recovered and owners identified items. Hearings are set in Tazewell next week.
A 3,000 man CID picket line formed at the Air Associates plant in Bendix New Jersey with daily growth and a long motorized flank across Route 2. Police and 100+ officers maintained order as Union U A W aviation division called a strike starting September 30 over alleged unfair labor practices and failed contract signing. The Defense Mediation Board has yet to broker a settlement.
The first four students to solo in Winchester's second Civilian Pilots' Training Program at the Municipal Airport are Courtney Jones Sam McCarty Russell Cook and Marshall Anderson. Lieut George Scheder and Earl Shipe teach the course. Seven other students are in the fall class.
In the House of Commons a full dress war debate centered on strikes to knock Italy from the war and night land raids on German held coasts. Lord Beaverbrook warned of Russia's grave losses and the need for allied shipments to Moscow to replace tanks and planes.
