The White House presses Congress to move quickly on neutrality act revision to allow American vessels into belligerent ports. President Roosevelt supports lifting the arming ban on merchantmen and may consider removing other restrictions, amid a push in the Senate to repeal sections banning ships from combat zones.
Four year old Tommy Binner of Ridgeway West Virginia was struck by a car driven by Ellsworth Brengle of Winchester near his home yesterday afternoon. He suffered a compound fracture of the right leg plus bruises and shock but was in satisfactory condition at the hospital. West Virginia state police are investigating the mishap.

The Maritime Commission announced all 39 American crew members of the torpedoed freighter Lehigh have been saved. Twenty two landed at Bathurst and 22 at Preetown. two injuries among the Bathurst group and three toes lost among an ordinary seaman. The ship’s sinking followed by losses of other American vessels raises White House concern over piracy on Atlantic lanes.
A crash near San Antonio involving two night patrol planes killed instructor Lieut. Harold H. Jessen of San Antonio and Cadet A. B. O'Brien of Grand Rapids Michigan. Observer George Meador aged 23 from Narrows Virginia was critically injured and the road was blocked for hours.

Inwood West Virginia October 22 The C H Musselman Company apple sauce plant suffered the loss of its 40 by 100 foot pumice drying building after a fire near fourteen kilns destroyed it in about 25 minutes. Estimated damage is 25000 and insured. The blaze also damaged H L Snapp’s store across the tracks with water damage to nearby apartments. Firefighters from Martinsburg and Charles Town helped, aided by a 75000 gallon water reserve. Families displaced included the Hardys Abshires and the Wests. The drying plant processes pumice from apples for sale as feed and fertilizer. The cause is under investigation.
The Virginia Conference met in Lynchburg to authorize a committee survey of wage scales and working conditions at Methodist institutions within its bounds. Rev Hopkins will appoint the committee chair, with A. C. Halvosa, Mrs. George W. Guy, and Rev W. P. Watkins named to the panel.
Richard S. Wright Jr. announced the appointment of Dorothy McCann Rice of Winchester as a member of the State Women’s Committee from the Seventh District. Mary Darling was named a member from Richmond, and Preston Moses of Charlottesville was appointed to the editorial board of the Virginia Young Democrat.
Dr Otto Frederickson professor of Political Science at Madison College Harrisonburg will address the Rotary Club at a special luncheon Thursday evening at 7 o clock instead of the regular meeting. The talk promises interest on European and domestic affairs.
The French government announced that 60 French hostages were executed by German authorities this morning in Nantes in retaliation for the assassination of German officers. Marshal Petain and Admiral Darian blamed foreign powers for the killings and warned that 50 more French hostages would be shot if the killers are not captured by midnight tomorrow. The second officer’s death occurred in Bordeaux as the crackdown intensified.
Clarke County plans to reopen the Old Chapel school to relieve crowding. One class will occupy the former Langbein dwelling while second floor classrooms are removed and fluorescent lighting installed. Bid for a new Boyce high school tops normal costs by about 35,000, with total projections higher due to material and labor increases.
Harrisonburg city council declared an emergency in the water supply and enacted an emergency ordinance prohibiting hose use for sprinkling lawns washing autos windows and porches with fines from five to fifty dollars for first offenses. The second offense may lead to service restrictions.
British bombers attacked Bremen in northwest Germany last night and hit docks at Brest Lorient Aarhus and northern French and Dutch airfields. The air ministry reported three planes lost, but 13 German fighters destroyed in sweeps over northern France. Ten British fighters were lost. four pilots were rescued.
British bombers pummeled Naples in a five hour wave causing extensive damage. The raid killed 14 and left 27 injured, marking the heaviest assault on Italy's west coast port city this week. An earlier attack last Thursday killed 12 and injured 37.
A four-vehicle collision on the northern outskirts of Hagerstown left four people injured including A. L. Higgs of Winchester with a fractured leg and possible internal injuries. The truck driver Howard C Cain, 30, also of Winchester, received a $5 fine for reckless driving.
Advices from London say Hitler’s Moscow drive has peaked and bogged down in snow with heavy losses along the Mozhaisk front. German assault around Leningrad also stalled as Soviet forces fall back to new lines while German hopes hinge on Smolensk for a renewed frontal push toward Moscow.
British warships blasted German long range batteries in a surprise night attack off Salum Tobruk.
