Washington reports the third quarter GNP expanded at 4 percent, slowing from 4.5 percent in Q2 and 9.2 percent in Q1. Economists say growth barely keeps up with labor force expansion and does not fully provide new jobs.
Ford and Carter declared the contest tight with polls showing a dead heat and both campaigns planning final pushes. Carter blasted voter apathy in Florida while Ford stayed in Washington and urged backers to see a close race to the finish.

American Michaiah Shobek 22 was hanged at Fox Head Prison in Nassau for the 1974 knifing murder of Irwin Bornstein and confessed to killing two other tourists. Officials described the execution in detail as reporters witnessed the burial at Old Trail Cemetery a private pauper section. His mother in Milwaukee called him deranged by illness.
