Mayor of Annapolis Irked Over Lack of Official Welcome Seeks Explanation. Hoover Makes Dramatic Appeal for Nationwide Unemployed Support.
President Hoover lauded Virginia hospitality as a national standard during an unscheduled speech at Yorktown. He spoke at a luncheon with leaders from three nations and presented honorary degrees to Marshal Petain Claudel and others amid a sesquicentennial pageant.
President Hoover arrived at Yorktown amid 21 gun salutes and a ceremonial procession led by Governor Pollard. He recalled 150 years of history, urged renewed strength for the future, and received gold medals from the Yorktown commission for his service to the nation and mankind.
Senator Swanson of Virginia presiding at a sesquicentennial celebration fell ill after the morning exercises and was driven to a nearby hotel with a physician. Governor Pollard suggested it was indigestion, and Senator Bingham of Connecticut presided at a luncheon for President Hoover in his stead.
Mrs Anna Mary Hicks died at her daughter’s home on North Loudoun Street after a month long illness. Survived by husband Thos J Hicks and children Ethel Maher Stella Hicks Mayme Bott Edythe Miller and Elmer Hicks five grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral services at 3 pm tomorrow at Mrs Bott’s home with private service by Rev Dr L A Thomas and Rev Dr F T McFaden. Interment Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers named George Heist A D Henkel Robert W Shultz Chas R McCann Lewis F Cooper William R Miller.

The body of Thomas A. Edison lay in state in the lab at his West Orange home as crowds filed through. Public viewing continued until Tuesday evening. a private funeral is set for Wednesday in Llewellyn Park, with burial at Rosedale Cemetery in Orange.
