The Middletown Stephens City F F A fair opened yesterday drawing crowds from Winchester, Middletown and nearby areas. Home economics and the Stephens City Home Demonstration Club organized varied exhibits including canned goods and flowers. Judges faced many fine corn and fruit entries.
The historic Hotel Tacoma in Tacoma Washington valued at 300000 dollars was destroyed by fire today. Guest Edith Owens was carried out unconscious and rushed to General Hospital. Three firefighters were overcome by smoke during the blaze.
Winchester women led a drive after the Civil War to bring home Confederate soldiers buried in Stonewall Cemetery. Funds funded graves for 829 unknowns from multiple Southern states. The inscription honors courage and memory of those who died for the land they loved.

NEW YORK October 17 The Secretary of Commerce Roper forecast a five to ten percent rise in 1935 from 1934's nearly 50 billion dollars. Speaking to the National Sales Executives Conference he called the current sales picture the most encouraging since 1929 and said income growth has been rising since 1933 with no adverse trend seen.
CHICAGO Oct 17 A mental expert testified for the defense in the emascuation slaying case of Dr Walter Bayer that defendant Zenge appears driven insane by lost love. Dr Harold Hulbert a Chicago psychiatrist described Zenge as delayed in development with manic depressive traits and capable of wild acts under sudden emotional shock. The defense argues Zenge killed after learning his fiancée Louise Shaffer, 24 Kirksville nurse, would marry Bayer.
At Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland a heavy truck carrying CCC workers overturned killing one man identified as Arthur Strike and injuring five others. One victim suffered a broken arm while the rest sustained non serious injuries and an Army inquiry began.
The American Legion bowling squad faces the season minus star Dayton I. Pahrney who has transferred to Sparrows Point Baltimore. Purcell Plank is expected to fill in while Jesse Kira core Frank Gearing Arthur D Boone and Harold Red Darlington anchor the lineup for key matches.
Mrs Nettie Beckerle testified that Cecil Winner told her he carried the illegitimate child of Anna Ware from her mother's house to the home of Mrs Nellie Tipton Muench. The habeas corpus case concerns Miss Ware alleging Mrs Muench and Dr Ludwig O Muench took the infant and planned to pass it off as their own. Winner is the son of midwife Rebecca Winner, born August 17 at her home and taken to an undisclosed destination.
Cardif Wales Oct 17 The stay down miners strike in coal villages loses force as many strikers rise to join wives and comrades at the pithead. The miners federation executive council urged all strikers to return ending the plan for 176000 workers to walk out in sympathy with 88 non union men. Hundreds remained underground and the general walkout would have involved over 10000 workers.
In Toulon France on October 17 sirens and overhead aircraft signaled an air raid defense drill at France s largest Mediterranean naval base. Navy personnel and civilians practiced taking cover from hypothetical bombs and poison gas.
Senator Fletcher says government spending has restored about 10 billion dollars of bank credit lost in the 1930s deflation. He notes rising bank loans and deposits, increased purchasing power, more real estate demand, and overall healthy financial conditions.
