Richmond Va October 17 Richard Evelyn Byrd federal attorney for the western district of Virginia returns from France where he warned that France faces a severe economic struggle with Germany and the United States and Japan will be major players. He notes Germany is highly organized industrially and France lags while preserving strength in luxury goods and wine. Continued on page 3.

Mr. Newton Swartz, a well known retired miller, is seriously injured at his North Market Street home after slipping in the kitchen doorway and fracturing his right hip. He is eighty years old and his condition is described as serious.
Chapman’s Auto Supply Co in Winchester Virginia offers a promotion promising a Ford car or $200 in cash with no extra cost beyond typical prices. The ad emphasizes service courtesy and satisfaction in urging customers to buy.
A two horse team belonging to Mr E V Weems ran away in front of his house on Fairmont avenue injuring the driver. They struck a carriage of Taylor Evans and toppled it. The team hit Mrs Franck Bakers carriage and a wagon in front of Henry Seals. They damaged Mrs Alice Erles Pittsburgh car and finally fell at the Baltimore and Ohio station before being captured. The Associated Press reports a clash of statements as steel employers claim optimism with Carnegie Steel noting about 90 percent of blast furnaces in operation since the strike began, while union leaders insist the strikers are gaining ground and new recruits are joining daily. In Gary Indiana, raids on radical centers continue with 15 men held for examination linked to Soviet movement or propaganda.
Secretary of Labor Wilson meets with John L. Lewis acting UMWA president and Thomas J. Brewster of the coal operators to mediate. No fixed plan announced as talks aim to prevent a miners strike set for November 1 in the central field.
The infant William Robert Hamilton son of Mr and Mrs Robert Hamilton died in Pittsburgh Pa. The funeral was held at 4 oclock from the residence of John H Seal Sr with Rev Clarence Woods of Centenary Reformed Church officiating. Burial was in Mount Hebron Cemetery. The parents, natives and former Winchester residents, Mr Hamilton worked at the Eddy Press before moving with the company to Cumberland Md then Pittsburgh. Mrs Hamilton was formerly Miss Grace Goss of this city.

Washington October 17 The bulletin says Wilson’s prostatic condition, hindering his two week improvement, may require operation. Dr Graygon will have Dr Hugh Young from Johns Hopkins examine and decide if surgery is needed. Earlier treatment by Dr Fowler noted irritation from swelling affecting his nerves and delaying recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. B F Kohlhousen and children plan to leave Winchester around November 7 for Houston Texas to make their home. Kohlhousen has been elected vice president and general manager of the Barden Electric and Machine Company in Houston and leaves his 11 year post with Northern Virginia Power Company.
Intelligence reached Winchester of the death of Mrs Frances Washington Smith at Hyattsville Maryland on Wednesday morning. She was in her seventy third year, a Frederick County native and longtime school teacher. Survived by husband Basil Smith and several children. Funeral held at Hyattsville today.
Mrs and Mrs John F Jones of Philadelphia are staying a few days at Hotel Jack. Mr Jones formerly did business locally and is visiting to oversee his farm in the county.
The Rev. O. D. Lambert will preach on Sunday at Welltown at 11 o'clock Brucetown at and Burnt Factory at p. m. Ellen and Margaret Jett of Roanoke Va. visit Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Tavenner at their Albin home in this county.
Lieutenant Belvin W. Maynard, dubbed the flying parson, reached Omaha after a forced landing near Wahoo when his crankshaft broke. Major Carl Spatz asked to withdraw from the race, offering his plane to Captain Lowell H. Smith. Maynard’s arrival in Rock Island was greeted by an ovation, while Smith departed Buffalo in Spatz’s aircraft toward Cleveland.
In Stockholm Assoc lecturer Guido Schneider of Riga claimed Bolsheviks executed 23 632 men women and children in Riga. He described intoxicated executioners unable to aim, repeating shots as victims endured hours of agony, with young girls volunteering and firing rifles at prisoners.
Mr. Charles A. McCarty learns his niece Miss Daisy McCarty died in Romney West Virginia on Wednesday. He rushed to attend the funeral held today in Romney. She was a daughter of Cornelius McCarty of Romaney.
