In Houston at the Alley Theater the two U.S. senators contend in a 75 minute televised argument starting at 9 30 p m EDT. Mondale promises an engaging performance while Dole jokes about possibly attending a high school football game.
Clarke County leaders consider hosting a regional jail discussion with Frederick and Warren counties Winchester City Council and sheriffs. Davis cites overcrowding relief and meeting minimum standards as reasons for a regional jail concept.
The Times CBS national poll shows Carter narrowing Ford’s advantage by stressing Carter’s critique of the economy and foreign policy. Carter leads in the Middle West while Ford trails in the East though ties hold in the West, with Catholic voters shifting notably toward Carter in industrial states.
The Business Council predicts 5 percent GDP growth in 1977 with inflation at 5.5 percent and unemployment at 6.5 percent by year end. Ford and Carter are viewed similarly for policy impact, though Ford favored by many executives. The forecast aligns with Ford administration projections.
Postmaster J C Chamberlin announced Winchester's new Post Office will open Monday November 8 after acceptance from contractors. An 81 year old Hayfield woman Pearl Mae Henry was killed when a Frederick County deputy vehicle struck her on Route 50 near her home seven miles west of Winchester. Deputy Robert Eckman 25 swerved to avoid her then hit the median. investigation ongoing with no charges filed.
The Bank of Oklahoma found a pair of women's panties in its teller drawers with a check printed on the blue backside. The panty check for 10.85 drawn on a California bank was endorsed to Shell Oil Co and arrived in a bag of uncollectables from Shell's accounting department. The bank will cash the check in California and credit Shell's account.
