Mrs Griffith Called By Death In Frederick County

The funeral of Mrs. Viola Hunt Griffith widow of R Edward Griffith will be held at Christ Episcopal Church at 4 pm tomorrow. Interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery. She was 83, a Richmond Indiana native, Cincinnati Conservatory trained, and last survived by her son Richard E Griffith and a grandson R E Griffith Jr. Pallbearers named.

Roosevelt Leads In 31 States In Digest Poll

Roosevelt holds 53.54 percent of 1,983,634 ballots in the Literary Digest poll to 39.39 percent for Hoover and 5.36 percent for Norman Thomas. Eighteen new states report, with Hoover leading only in Vermont and gains noted in several others. Roosevelt dominates 31 states, while Hoover maintains strength in six New England states and New Jersey.

Apple Exports From Dominion Show Decrease

Port authority official notes Canadian export apples to the United Kingdom through Hampton Roads show a sharp drop this season through September 30. Barrel movements are less than half of last year while boxed apples nearly double. Canadian crop year appears about 20 percent smaller than last year.

Baltimore and Ohio to borrow 3 million for work loan

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was authorized to borrow 3 million dollars from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to build 820 coal cars 2,500 freight cars and to rebuild 165 locomotives. The loan aims to employ 1,500 workers on a 30 hour week for six months. Baltimore Cumberland and Brunswick MD will receive aid as 1,800 workers have already returned to work in shops across the system.

The Panorama Skyland section of the Skyland Drive in Shenandoah National Park will not open October 15 as planned. Acting Interior Secretary Joseph M. Byrd Critiques Hoover Prophecies On Prosperity

Former Governor Harry F. Byrd Virginia asserts Hoover prophets misled the public. He notes Hoover praised tariff policy in 1928 and supported the 1930 Grundy tariff, which Byrd says harmed world trade and caused misery. Byrd spoke in New York with Democrats framing Hoover as failed.

Johnson Won't Endorse Hoover In 1940 California Race

Senator Hiram W. Johnson, a California Progressive Republican, declined to back the Republican national and state tickets in response to requests from Southern California newspapers. He criticized Hoover administration policies, contrasted his own progressive stance with Hoover's conservatism, and warned the party is not at stake but rather one man's ambition. Johnson said Hoover’s philosophy emerged after his brief time in office, while he has long held his views.

President Hoover to Stop in Martinsburg for Brief Remarks

The special train bearing President Hoover and party from Washington to Cleveland will halt at the Baltimore and Ohio station in Martinsburg West Virginia tomorrow at 8 45 morning. Injured Youth Clings To Life After Maurertown Crash

Gaylord Cook, son of Mr and Mrs John Cook of the Columbia Furnace area in Shenandoah county, remained in critical condition at Winchester Memorial Hospital after a collision near Maurertown Wednesday night that also fatally injured two Winesburg sisters. Dr James Miller cautioned condition uncertain, with Cook mostly unconscious but lucid at times. The wreck also involved a produce truck linked to Harry Abrams of Washington DC. Inquest by coroner W C Ford began, with Abrams held on bond while the investigation continues. The Maurertown crash occurred near Valley Pike Church around 9 pm Wednesday.
