Linen Duster Hero Drives Off Union Horse Heist
A Civil War tale from 1864 tells how Clairborne Robinson of Mosby’s command, in a linen duster, crossed the Potomac to Maryland, stole a farmer’s fine horse after a barroom race, and outran a captain and eight men back to Leesburg. The incident echoes another linen-duster disguise used by Governor Smith’s unit, noted in a Clarksville reminiscence.
