The thirty-first Virginia State Convention of the Daughters of the American Revolution opened in Martinsville with about 150 attendees. State Regent Mrs. James R. Schick presides as president general Mrs. Alfred J. Brosseau and four other national officers attend. The event includes committee reports and an address by Mrs. Schick. The hosts plan entertainment and a banquet hosted by the Martinsville Kiwanis Club. The convention may meet in Winchester in October 1928, via Fort Loudoun Chapter. Miss Rose McDonald of Berryville, elected delegate, was diverted to New York and could not attend.
The Women's Civic League will hold its monthly meeting Thursday at 3 30 p.m. at Mrs. Melvin Green's home. Members are urged to attend to discuss the coming season's work and new members will be welcomed.

Col James M Schoonmaker longtime chairman of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Rail road Company died in a Pittsburgh hospital after an appendicitis operation. He was a Civil War veteran known for refusing two orders, aided Lexington restoration via Congress after the war, and supported Confederate monument funds in Winchester. He leaves his wife Reba Cooker, a daughter, and two sons.
Sheriff Pannett returned from Petersburg with George Jones indicted by the Frederick county grand jury for robbing Tamas Sawyers filling station at Gore during a wave of robberies last summer. Jones, once committed as insane, was declared sane and is to stand trial. The sheriff then headed to Cumberland Maryland to seize Lowery a white man charged with possessing a still.
General Alvaro Obregon, sole presidential candidate, says the revolution is over and loyal forces will capture General Arnulfo Gomez within six days. He predicts any plot against the existing government will end. In Nogales, Oct. 12, AP report. Thames Short, a Page County widower, was found guilty of second degree murder in Page County Circuit Court for the death of Essie Buracker. The jury set his punishment at 20 years in the Richmond state penitentiary after a long deliberation that began with a split verdict. Short denied knowledge of the crime while testifying and said he did not shoot Buracker as she was to become his wife. Letters from Buracker were read over the defense objection.
