Fire at Glaize Lumber complex causes $75,000 damage
A fire at the Glaize and Brother Lumber Company warehouse on Cameron Street and Fairfax Lane last night caused an estimated $75,000 in damages. Firemen from all four Winchester companies battled the blaze for over four hours after the 9:08 p.m. alarm, with authorities still determining the cause.

Hershey to be Relieved as Selective Service Director
Washington AP reports Lt. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey will be relieved as director of Selective Service on February 16 and reassigned as presidential advisor on manpower mobilization. A civilian successor will be named soon to serve as deputy director, with Hershey’s task to train the new director and aid the transition to a youngest first draft system and standby draft plans. President Nixon plans to nominate Hershey for full general and pursue 19 to 20 year olds as the prime draft pool.

Bus Tour Collision Near Opequon Creek Kills Two
A Baltimore tour bus and an eastbound Rambler collided head on near Opequon Creek Bridge seven miles east of Winchester on Route 50. Two Rambler occupants died, about 30 injured, most bus riders taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital.

Family of Baltimore Bus Crew Survives Major Wreck
Nearly all 41 passengers on a Monumental Motor Tours bus were members and relatives of a Baltimore family with 10 to 15 years of tours. The driver Edward Schaedel credited with preventing a rollover as a car swerved into the bus. Three generations were represented, with Mamie Langenfelder the eldest onboard.
