Winchester Rotarians led by about 40 attendees won the song contest and were entertained by parodies led by Carl Balt New Market and Gy Mee Woodstock. Reverend Dr Charles J Smith Roanoke College president gave the keynote address. A beefsteak dinner followed with entertainment and Rotary golf prizes announced.
The Rev. J. C. Hooks, longtime pastor of Frederick circuit, M E Church, is transferred to the New Market pastorate in Shenandoah county. He and Mrs. Hooks drove to New Market and will preach tomorrow. They plan to return to Winchester to finish packing and ship household effects. The parsonage may be occupied by the new circuit pastor, Rev. Paul R. Diehl, next week. Round Hill church members express deep regret at his departure and praise his service.
Berryville Virginia mourns John Baldwin Neill longtime Bank of Clarke County cashier and Grace Episcopal Church junior warden. Funeral held at Grace Episcopal Church with interment at Green Hill Cemetery as Bank of Clarke County and First National Bank suspend operations for the day. Attending out of town guests include Capt and Mrs John B Neill Jr and Mrs Bayard Stevens.
Adolfo de la Huerta former provisional president of Mexico confirms that his followers and Arnulfo Gomez faction in Mexico are in complete accord on the incident involving arms shipments to Mexico. The statement ties Mexican factions to a shared position amid federal charges and international tensions.
J Edwin Giles Jr a longtime Washington accountant and confidant of Samuel Gompers died at Georgetown University Hospital from a blood infection after a minor leg injury at the American Federation of Labor building. He had been chief accountant of the AFL and accompanied Gompers on many trips. Funeral rites are planned for Monday afternoon. Survived by widow Eloise Wagner his father J E Giles Sr two sisters Miss Katherine Giles and Mrs William A Verhas and brother G Barre Giles, with a nephew Rudolph.
Gar land M. Hansbrough a Winchester businessman and Hansbrough and Carter partner is hospitalized at Memorial Hospital after a Thursday illness at Shenandoah Valley National Bank. Officials report a slight improvement today from previously serious condition. His father S. H. Hansbrough once led Hansbrough and Carter and served as Shenandoah Valley National Park president.
Two men shot to death in Cleveland were found bullet riddled and bound with rope. Identified as Ernest J. Yorkell and Jack Brownstein of Philadelphia, authorities suspect they were undercover agents. Brownstein reportedly faced liquor possession charges. Yorkell was wanted for running down a girl with a car.
Cardinal O Connell of the Boston archdiocese bans the singing of the hymn Beautiful Isle of Somewhere at funerals. The ban has received public endorsement from several Protestant clergymen. He calls the hymn vulgar inane and trashy.
The Elks baseball team received the handsome silver loving cup awarded for the Inter-Club League season. Engraved on the cup are the players’ names and the club with the inscription Championship 1927 Inter-Club League. Local league teams included Lions Kiwanis Rotary and Briks clubs.
Rev L F Harper of Berryville will preach at the Presbyterian Chapel on Highland Avenue tomorrow at 7 30 p m. The notice emphasizes the guest preacher in a local church event.
H. Clay DeGrange distributed this week's Rotary Club luncheon a large number of Winesap apples. The apples were taken from cold storage where they had been kept since last fall and were in splendid condition with no deterioration observed.

At a special meeting the council fixed December 1 as the deadline to pay city taxes without a 3 percent penalty due to delays in preparing tax books. State taxes can be paid by December 16 but may bar voting in June if not paid six months prior. The council also disallowed two claims, including $500 for alleged use of the Town Run as a sewer and funeral expenses for an indigent citizen.
Mayor C W Smallwood calls a public meeting in the Stephens City theater at 8 p m on Thursday October 13 to discuss buying fire equipment for the growing community. He urges all residents nearby to attend as better fire protection is sought for valuable property.
