The Yankees won the third game of their series against the Pirates in New York. Pitching and batting led to a decisive result as the home club extended its lead in the set.
New York fans packed Yankee Stadium two hours before game time as the Yankees held extra batting practice after two wins over the Pirates. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig led the surging crowd with powerful hits while Tony Lazzeri, wrist hurt, practiced in a bandaged, line-drive fashion.
Baseball scoreline shows New York 2 runs in the second, 6 in the seventh, and 2 in the ninth to total 10. Pittsburgh tallies 1 in the ninth inning for a final 10 to 1 scoreline. Ts leads the chart with a late surge.

Bruce Herrell proprietor of the American Star Restaurant on West Boscawen street was found dead by his son Leo in a room over the restaurant shortly before 7 pm death attributed to apoplexy. He had long worked hard at the business and is survived by his wife Lillian and three sons plus a brother Nimrod.
A Richmond businessman praised Governor Byrd and Virginia gas prices after returning from New England where he paid as low as 12 cents a gallon. He noted Virginia supplies cost 23 cents locally and accused gas companies of harming Virginia motorists with higher prices.
Roberto Forni, deputy in the Italian Chamber, was killed instantly when his airplane crashed near Rome. The report notes the fatal incident occurred today, and mentions other brief items about Mrs. B. F. Taylor in Baltimore and Claude Massey traveling to Whalethorpe for the Fairs of the Iron Horse.

The Rev T J Lambert presiding elder of the Baltimore district and his wife, with Rev B A Lambert and his wife, escaped serious injury when their sedan collided with a large truck owned by C C Bowman north of Mount Jackson. The truck tried to cross the road in front of the Lambert car after returning from the annual conference at Roanoke. the elder’s wife suffered a painful bruise and the car was badly damaged.
Miss Mercedes Gleitz, a London typist, entered the English Channel at 2.55 am from Cape Gris Nez for her seventh attempt. Reported nearly three hours later to be swimming strongly despite dense fog, she was accompanied by a Folkestone fishing boat.
Berlin report says Hammerman George Scheffauer, American author and critic, shot his private secretary and then killed himself at his Berlin home after cutting both wrists and leaping from a window. He was a San Francisco native who had long lived abroad.
Appleton Wisconsin October 7 One man is dead and more than twenty workers are believed buried after floors collapsed at part of the Kimberly-Clark paper mill in Kimberly four miles northeast of Appleton Fire crews and 150 workers battled to reach those trapped Otto Krueger of Kimberly died in a local hospital as rescue effort continued.

An Atlantic County grand jury returned a first degree murder indictment against Mrs. Margaret Lilliendahl and Willis Beach in the killing of Dr. A William Lilliendahl near Hammonton on September 15. Both held as material witnesses and charged with aiding and abetting before being released on bail.
Geneva October 7 The movement for the strictest surveillance of narcotics traffic gains momentum with a League of Nations opium commission sub committee adopting a resolution by Col Arthur Woods demanding government ownership or control of narcotic manufacturing factories.
The second annual field day of the third division of Knights Templar will take place in Hagerstown Maryland on Wednesday October 26. Exercises occur at Willow Lane Ball Park with a 2 30 PM parade featuring 600 to 700 uniformed knights and a reception and ball at the new temple auditorium. Delegations from Cumberland Frederick and Baltimore will attend with brisk drilling and bands in the parade.
In police court today Lee Evans was fined 25 dollars after a revolver was found on his person. The payment completed the fine.
In Hagerstown Maryland workers found five skeletons along the Potomac near Big Pool. After the first was unearthed four more followed. Two skeletons were intact with boots hats and trousers. A resident linked two skeletons to an old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad wreck but could not explain the others.
Lieutenant Governor Junius E. West declares he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 1929. He emphasizes industrial development, fiscal efficiency, and aligning with Governor Byrd’s program while noting he will not pursue the U.S. Senate. He calls for a low cost primary and urges press and public cooperation.
Four persons were killed and three injured when a Santa Fe passenger train hit a car at a railway crossing near Dallas Texas. One injury was described as probably fatal.
