Dr. Charles W. Eliot, Harvard president emeritus, writes in Atlantic Monthly October issue arguing Democratic policies compare favorably to Republicans. He cites tariff revision early in the Wilson administration and urges voters to judge by acts of the parties.
Messrs Fugitt and Whittington local horse dealers shipped a carload of colts age one to four years to a dealer in Greencastle Pa. Some colts heavy draft weighed 1400 pounds. They were bought in Frederick county and all in good condition. They attracted much attention among horsemen.
The October term of Frederick county Circuit Court adjourned with Judge J B T Thornton presiding. Eugene Ritter the Frederick county magistrate charged with shooting his wife was continued to the December term. Bail was denied after opposition by Commonwealths Attorney T R Cather and Ritter remained in jail.
The Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias of Virginia concluded sessions at Petersburg and elected Charles D. Fox of Roanoke as grand chancellor for the next year. Most officers were advanced. Roanoke will host next year’s convention. J. M. Spurr represented Winchester Lodge 65 and is visiting Washington with relatives.
The Star prints the sixth installment of the prohibition measure passed by the last Virginia General Assembly. It states that a hotel manager or owner must obtain a license from the circuit court before receiving ardent spirits wines or alcohols. The continuation appears on page 8.
Chicago reports another 20 cent per barrel advance on standard Minnesota patent high grade family flour to 9.30, marking the second hike in ten days. The same flour traded at 5.90 a barrel a year ago and recently at 8.90 two weeks earlier.
The Day of Atonement known as Yom Kippur will begin at sunset today and end at sunset Saturday. It closes the holy season begun with New Year last Wednesday, a ten day period of penitence observed by Orthodox Hebrews and many reform communities.
Several absolute divorces were granted by Judge J. B. T. Thornton in Frederick County Circuit Court during the October term. Heith P. Alkire received custody of daughter Pauline Elizabeth Alkire. Charles Henry Hardy and Laura Hardy were divorced with custody arrangements for their minor children. Mary E. Sigter was granted an absolute divorce from Clarence Sigter.

Judge Henry W. Holt of the eighteenth circuit will preside in Winchester Corporation Court starting October 16, replacing Judge T. W. Harrison who resigned to run for Congress. Governor Stuart is expected to appoint Harrison’s successor in early November.
Mrs Minnie Trenary wife of Wheatley Trenary died at 11 oclock Wednesday night at her home between White Post and Boyce Clarke county after a lingering tuberculosis aged about thirty. She was formerly Miss Minnie Johnson of Limeton Warren county Va and leaves two children and her father. Funeral services were held at the family residence and the remains interred in Mount Hebron Cemetery Winchester.
Mr. Charles A. Bentley of Havana Cuba travels from Stephenson to Richmond for the Virginia State Fair and plans to sail to Havana on October 14. He has roles with the Cuban National Horticultural Society and the German Kali Company. Prof. H A Houston, U S government representative at the German Kali works, joins Bentley in touring Frederick county apple orchards. They praise local fruit quality and compare it favorably with other U S regions.
At the Baltimore whale sale market close, No 2 red winter wheat was quoted at 1.58 3 4 per bushel and corn ranged from 97 to 98 cents.

The funeral for Julia Je Bahiman wife of C A Bahiman and daughter of Mrs James Anderson was held yesterday at Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South. Rev W O Talbert led the service with hymns by the church choir. A large gathering paid tribute, with floral offerings. Interment followed in Mount Hebron Cemetery in the family lot. Pallbearers included Harry Woodward Dailey Shonaker Dr J L Whitlock William Ritter Robert Massey and Henkel Carpenter.
Six alleged members of a $1,000,000 blackmail syndicate were indicted by a federal grand jury in New York. Warrants were issued for arrest. defendants include William Butler of Philadelphia and others named in two indictments each, one for conspiracy and one for impersonating federal officers. Edward West testified as the sole witness.
Miss Mary Meredith Marshall, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Clarkson Marshall, will wed Dr Hugh McCulloch of St Louis Mo at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church on Thursday October 26 at 8 pm. The ceremony will be conducted by Rev William Marshall of Casanova Va. Dr McCulloch teaches pediatrics at Washington University and is connected with the children's hospital. He is son of Judge E A McCulloch, chief justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court of Appeals.
C W B N B Horn received $100 first prize for the vast Reptbit of track on the Cumberland Valley line between Morrisburg and Martinsburg during the annual inspection tour in Chambersburg. N E Shoap was awarded $40 but died days earlier, with his prize going to his estate. Other prizes included H B Miller 80, R Statler 60, D R Sites 40, S F Gantz 30, and Co GC Shanholtz 80 for notable improvements last year.

Telegram from San Francisco reports the death of Harry R. Trundle at noon yesterday. Born in Maryland about 59, he lived in Norfolk and then San Francisco. He had worked in the mercantile business on South Main street and was well liked by friends and colleagues in this city.
