Protests Rise Over Freight Rate Increases Hearing Opens
Atlanta October 4 opposition to proposed freight rate hikes on hundreds of commodities affecting the Southeast was voiced by about a hundred shipping representatives at the Southern classification committee hearing. Georgia agriculture commissioner Eugene Talmadge urged against any increase on raw materials including apples peanuts pecans and calcium arsenate. The special docket lists 1877 classifications with farm implements and naval stores among items to be debated in coming sessions.

Washington October 4 Rural problems of the Red Cross dominated the seventh annual convention with an address by Secretary Hoover on the Mississippi flood. Emerson Landis urged better coordination of city chapters with rural branches to reach doctors scarce in isolated communities.
