The New York Yankees win the first game at Forbes Field to begin the 1927 World Series. The Pirates fall behind early as pitching and timely hitting push the Yankees to the victory.
At Forbes Field nearly 45,000 watched the Pirates and Yankees begin the 1927 World Series. Ray Kremer spun for Pittsburgh opposite Waite Hoyt as Ruth and Gehrig led New York to a 1 1 first inning. Outside fans strained to hear cheers as scalpers faced arrests and the city buzzed with baseball fever.
A tangle of accusations emerged in Frederick and Clarke counties as Sheriff Smallwood sought warrants for John White on highway robbery and Harry Newcome for impersonating an officer. White claimed two strangers abducted him near Winchester and a missing package led to further conflicts involving Irvin Meadows and Elmer Hirth who paid $14 under threat. Newcome had prior moonshining conviction and faces renewed trouble after a release on bail.
New York stock market opened with a cushion of buying orders that absorbed overnight selling. Prices slipped briefly but then recovered after an unexpectedly large rise in stock exchange member loans last month. The call money rate reached 4 1/4 percent before easing.
An order in Frederick County Circuit Court moves all trials of this week’s indicted persons from October 13 to Friday October 11. The change affects trials in the same court and week.
L. R. Dettra was named to serve another year as city manager of Winchester after a unanimous council vote. The meeting re-elected most officials, kept the seven member police force, and approved salaries and ordinances including a $1.40 real estate tax rate and a $5,000 short term loan. Local arrests for September totaled 41 with liquor violations prominent.
John Baldwin Neill of Berryville Virginia died at the home on North Braddock street Winchester at ten this morning after seven years of paralysis. His wife was at his bedside and his son Captain John B Neill Jr of Quantico flew here by plane to reach him. He leaves three sons and a long Clarke county family line. Funeral plans to Berryville likely Friday.
The Associated Press reports crop conditions for the week ending yesterday. Virginia shows very favorable maturing conditions with good progress in picking cotton.
Sam L. Warner, vice-president of Warner Brothers Pictures, Inc., motion picture producers, died in Los Angeles on October 5 after suffering pneumonia following an acute sinus episode.

Cecil Wilson 24 surrendered to police claiming coercion by Betty Wilson to join the Mt. Jackson National Bank hold up on July 25. He faces embezzlement charges in Washington before possible transfer to Shenandoah County Virginia authorities. The quartet fled via West Virginia mountains in a Buick sedan, with Dellinger and Helen Blackwell also implicated.
Cecil Wilson, linked to the Mt Jackson robbery, grew up in Wardensville West Virginia. Hardy County sheriff and others who knew him describe him as a bright student and regular churchgoer. They suggest his drift may stem from companions after moving to Washington. The Wilson family lived in Wardensville during its boom era when the railroad arrived from Winchester.
The article clarifies there are 32 Virginia hospitals on the American College of Surgeons approved list, correcting an earlier error that claimed only three hospitals. The correction cites a report by Dr. Franklin St. Martin of Chicago, director-general of the college.

The Colonial Theatre will reopen Friday night offering two shows each night at 7 and 9 with a Saturday matinee at 2 30. Universal presents The Lone Eagle starring Raymond Keane and Barbara Kent, a WWI aviation thriller inspired by Lindbergh. Also at The Empire Betty Bronson in Ritzy, Knoc kout Reilly with Richard Dix, and Casey at the Bat to follow with World Series games.
The Virginia Division UDC convenes at the United Brethren Church with 111 delegates present and about 175 registering at the George Washington Hotel. Officers endorsed include Mrs. W C Merchant for president general and Mrs. B A Blenner for treasurer general. The group reports debt free with funds intact and outlines plans for relief work and education.
