Tomorrow night marks the start of a long running series produced under Chester High School and the Bevo Theatre, with proceeds above expenses pledged to the Red Cross fund. The aim is to provide the city with an admirable program of entertainments for wholesome community benefit.

The funeral of Edward Purcell the noted railroad contractor who died at his Washington home on Sunday was held yesterday from the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Harrisonburg. Rites were led by the Rev Me Gryse assisted by Rev John McVerry and J A Curran with W A McKeefry preaching. Harrisonburg Lodge No 450 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks attended in a body and burial followed at Woodbine Cemetery.

John M. Gibson a long time Clarke County clerk died at his Rosemont home after a paraly sis stroke. He was 84 born in Loudoun County and survived by wife Lydia Smith Gibson, son Treadwell Smith Gibson, two daughters Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Dearmont, two grandchildren, and brother Henry Gibson. Funeral held at Christ Church Millwood with burial in Green Hill Cemetery Berryville.
London reports that a British air ministry will be created to command air reprisals against Germany. The announcement notes long standing demand for such a ministry and for reprisals targeting German autocracy cities.

Washington October 4 General Crowder announced that drafted men arrested as deserters will not be honorably discharged after jail terms. Washington October 4 The Council of National Defense issued a partial statement detailing its achievements since its March formation. It cites 600 million dollars spent on aircraft production as the council s greatest contribution to wartime efforts. The Aircraft Production Board is described as its largest tangible feat with much of the work kept confidential for military reasons.

Funeral services for Arthur R. Carter, who died suddenly of apoplexy, were held at Stone's Chapel Church with Rev. O D Lambert officiating. Carter, a well known local figure, left four brothers and two sisters, and several grandchildren.
Arthur Athey who had been ill at his National avenue home for weeks underwent a serious hip operation yesterday at Memorial Hospital. He stood the ordeal nicely and hopes to see friends in a few days. Mrs Adelmann of Washington, D C, who had been visiting Miss Strapp, has returned home.

Mrs J H Ashwood and Meredith visit relatives in Rosenberger last weekend. Mrs E A Rush of Frederick Md spends several days with Mrs Hu 8 Benner.
John M. Miles announces a publicity committee to promote Virginia s food conservation drive from today to October 27. The panel includes Edward L. Stone as chairman F H Labaume as vice chairman and W E Thomas R A Hughes T G Wood and Miles. Each county city will have a local chairman under C Edwin Michael to push measures aligned with Hoover s guidance and emphasize efficient eating and conserving food for Allied needs.

Washington reports reveal Count von Bernstorff, the former German ambassador, spent about 27 million dollars in the United States from his arrival after the European war began until his recall. State Department officials say much funded pro German aims and some bought raw materials for post war use. The extent of illegal expenditure was not disclosed.
The Northern Virginia Power Company completes a new 3000 horsepower unit at its Winchester Millyilte plant. Captain J F Cooper says the unit will be in operation this afternoon and connected to the auxiliary steam plant. This addition should relieve past power shortages for manufacturing and lighting.
Winchester and Frederick County sent twenty more young men to Camp Lee Petersburg Va via the Baltimore and Ohio and Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac rail lines. The departure drew hundreds of relatives and friends as the soldiers, cheerful, waved goodbye. They are led by Russell Hook with William Keith Sr as second in command. If accepted at Camp Lee this pushes the local tally to 59 in training, with 30 more still to go including 14 colored men and 16 white men.
